95' Honda Accord timing trouble.

95' Honda Accord timing trouble.
I've been scratching my head over this accord. I just completed a timing belt change, and verified that all timing marks were properly aligned. When I got the car back together, I jumpered the service check plug, and put a timing gun on it. The timing was retarded and I attempted to advance it with the distributor, however, I ran out of adjustment. Fearing my timing was somehow out of wack, I pulled the number one spark plug and checked for TDC. The cam mark lined up perfectly. Could it be some sort of component failed or failing? Any help is greatly appreciated. We purchased the car used, it had a salvaged title. Up until now, it has been a great little car.
Thanks again,
Ryan

For a tad more detail - there are at least two marks on the crank pulley (can remember right now but I think there are four). You might want to spin the engine to TDC #1 and add a dab of paint to the mark on the pulley noting zero BTC. Then look a little to the "left"/counter clockwise for a set of three marks, mark the center of those three with a different color.
Then re-try the timing light.
