Default heating crank pulley bolt

Looking for some first hand experience on the matter. I have searched but have gotten lots of conflicting answers. Some say "give er" some say damage can occur to the dampener or crank itself.

So my question is how hot did you get(dull red, red...white), what gas did you use(propane, mapp, oxy/act) and was there any adverse affects?

This bolt has put me through the ringer, and this is my last resort b4 bring it to a shop to have them break it free.

Did you already try an overnight soak in PB Blaster?

What method(s) have you tried to break the bolt loose?

Bolt has been soaked for days in "WD-40" then went to "Moovit" then "PB Blaster"

I started w/ 1/2" elec impact, then 3/4" and chain wrench for back-up. Got pulley holder tool and tried 4' snipe on 2' breaker bar w/ another 3' square tube on breaker bar & pulley tool on the ground. 4' wasn't enough went to 6' snipe....broke 2 1/2" extensions and 1 breaker bar.
Just borrowed 20 gallon 5hp compressor and air impact(1/2"). This is where I'm at now. Impact alone won't move it, tried forward/revese method.

I had the same problem.. Are you applying alot of pressure when using the impact? i know its a dumb question but you want to send the shock directly to the threads of the bolt. Also you want to use the shortest length socket you can because you lose tq thru extensions.

I finally just put the block on an engine stand and had a big burly bastard take hold of a breaker bar and a 5ft extension pipe and power it off.

The one I had to do (during a swap though) was a PITA. Impacts and the pulley tool would not budge it whatsoever.

I ended up laying the motor on its side, wedging the pulley tool (with breaker bar) against a wall, and using another breaker bar with about 3 feet of extensions (from my floor jack) and then a buddy of mine and I pushed as hard as possible on it. After about 4-5 tries, we finally got it.

I assume the motor is still in the car?

Thanks for the advice!

Can anyone answer the original ? Can u damage anything major(at this point I don't care about damaging the pulley itself, just the crank or something) by heating the bolt red hot?

air tools...idk if the brand matters but i have a snap on 1/2 impact and took it out with no problem after struggling with different methods...try this...ive done it before and it works...its on an accord but basically same thing

Yes, you "could" damage the pulley, as well as the oil seal behind it.
I know a few people who have tried heat, with no damage done but there is the risk of cuasing damage.

When I did mine, I finaly gave up and went a shop. Impact wouldn't budge it. Then he tried a braker bar, a torque wrench, and the pulley tool. Grabbed my core support and pushed on the torque wrench with his foot and it broke free.

This was after i beat the crap out of the bolt for 2 days. Braker bars, cheaper pipes, impacts etc.



For an impact you need 1200+ Ftlb of brake away torque. Dads buddy ended up using a 1'' to do one.

Thats how I broke 2 1/2" extensions and a 1
2' breaker bar.

I'm replacing the water pump, crank oil seal etc. anyways. I'm more worried about bearings or something else major. IDK try it and see....I guess.

i don't think you could damage the bearings. You'd have to get that sucker really hot to have any worrys about the bearings.

These bolts are no fun.

I've never had a problem using the chain wrench against the axle with breaker bar with cheater pipe then standing on it or sitting on the ground pushing it with my foot

fak yeah!!! Got it!

heated the bolt head dull red, air impact did nothing. Put the breaker bars and snipes back on....she cracked loose, put me on my ***. DONE

when you put it back on donut forget that stupi little woodruff key and be sure to loctite the crank bolt and let it sit for 24hrs, i didn't let the loctite sit and when i ran the car the bolt came out and damaged the crank and pulley

You DO NOT need to put loctite on this bolt. Torqueing it to spec should be plenty.
Loctite will just make it a bit*h for the next guy who trys to take it apart.

I did my timing belt a almost a year ago, and I didn't use loctite. The bolt is fine, and has not budged.

Obviously you didn't tourqe to specs then. As 98 said dont use loctite I never have and have never had an issue with crank pulley bolt coming loose. Just make sure you torque it back to spec

DO NOT USE LOCKTITE!!!!! You will make it so much harder to get out again.

The factory says 130 ft/lbs for the crank bolt....that should keep it in there.

I've heard that soaking the bolt in oil b4 reinstalling can ease the removal next time but IDK. Mayb someone with experience can chime in on this matter.

I didn't use anything, just put it right back in.


IMO at the end of the day, i'd rather fight that bolt. Why? becuase it tells me it's not going anywhere.

yep, had a breaker bar in some 2" square tube braced against the ground.

Funny, what I did to get mine off was I used an old shifter, stuck it in the pulley holes (b15b7 crank pulley) with a 2 ft extension and just cranked the biotch and it came off. A week later I bought a 26gal air compressor with an impact gun : /
