Custom speaker mounts for doors?
tried searching, only came up with one thread for a guy wanting good sound out of just speakers.
any ways my delemma is this: i'm putting together a shell, and am going to have a system in it. duh. i'm going with component 6.5's up front and 2 way 6.5's in the back (i have a set of "jdm" rear speaker mounts for the 6.5's). my problem is that the mids that i have for the door dont fit in the speaker basket at all.
has any one else come across this problem? or is there something i'm missing. i've already cut the back out of the speaker basket mount thingy, but the diameter isn't wide enough for the speaker. I can post pix if needed for clarification. Also, has any one ditched the stock plastic mounting brakets and gone w custom wood ones? i'm thinking that's what i'll have to do here.
thanks for helping a n00b!

Re: Custom speaker mounts for doors? (DCRB)
Yeah i threw out the plastic ones and just fabbed up a mount out of plexiglass. Took about an hour, but thats only because i only had a hacksaw to cut the plexiglass.

I took some 3/4 inch thick MDF (slightly thinner might be better, it's what I had. The components touch the speaker grilles a bit) and traced the plastic speaker cups over them. I then cut them out, drilled the car-mount holes and test fitted them.
After that was good, I traced the speaker, measured 1cm in, and cut the inner circle out with a 45ish degree bevel. It took a little while, but worked real well.
I should note, there is a possibility of getting the tops of your speakers wet. I haven't had a problem with it in 3 years, but if you're worried (or if your speakers are real expensive) you could extend the vapor barrier a little with some thick plastic. Screw it between the speaker mounts and the door, leaving enough room for the speaker, and having it open on the bottom.

Re: (bagpipe goatee)
j/w, would half inch ply wood work ok? or would the sound reproduction from it be like garbage.
i'm not too worried about water leaking... i'll be honest im pieceing together components... the woofers are from the "top of the line" alpine component set that retails for almost 300... bought them on ebay for like 40 bux... phoenix gold octain r z rated cross overs, bought those w the woofers (one of the magnets came unglued becasue the prev. owner dropped it at one time) for a door speaker project in my van, and the tweeters are just some kicker directional aluminum tweeters that sound good. not too worried about water damage, the doors i have don't really leak, and if they do meh oh well i change my system constantly so w/e... lol
but yeah thanks for the imput guys!!
i'm a n00b here, i'll probly have q's in the future. i'm transfering from a ford guy to a honda guy

That would probably work fine. They might be a little thin, test the speakers in the car to make sure a 1/2 inch gap will work without the speaker touching (rattling) against the door metal.
