I don't do much welding anymore, but occasionally do some when nobody else is available. The first pic is just filling in a low area on some subarc welding. You can see the subarc bead on the left. It's 420 stainless. This is just some quick cup walking. It got machined down smooth later that day.

The second picture is the root pass for my very first weld test for a job (1989). I was 18yo. It was the second time I had ever struck an arc on stainless steel. It could have been a bit more flush, but at that age, I was tickled to death with it..and the fact that I got the job.

Next up, a cap on some 4inch carbon steel. This wasn't long ago that I did this one.

Fourth: The root in a piece of 6inch carbon steel. I still remember welding it. I wanted to see how hot and fast I could weld it. This was at 231 amps. It probably took about a minute and a half to weld the entire root pass.

Fifth: Some piping I welded in a paper plant.

6 and 7: The big one is a huge microwave oven. You can stand inside it and not be able to touch the top. It was equipped with infrared cameras so you could see hot spots inside when it was running. I did some work on it after it was built, modifications and stuff. I did a lot of the square beam tube attached to it. The little one is another microwave oven. This thing is used at a national lab, and can melt metal inside. I built this one start to finish.

8: A nitrogen station I put in at a steel mill.

9: The cap on some stainless steel pipe. This is what it's supposed to look like...BRUSHED. Stainless is supposed to be brushed, contrary to what many people think.

There are a few reasons...it's quick, provides consistency and a good appearance, and you can make a bead wide or narrow.

i would literally kill anyone you hate in order to have you weld my cage and my intercooler piping, exhaust piping, and end tanks. on all of my cars lol

Just remember...if you want to know the PROPER and best ways to weld, you can't really look into the performance automotive field to find it. There are a few that know how to do things right, but many of them are so pressed for time that they sacrifice quality for speed.

There are reasons that you seldom see pictures of root passes. There are reasons that the places that CLAIM to have a robot do their welding doesn't ever post a picture of their robot. I mean...they don't make their own robot, so what's the big deal about just showing it in their shop?
