How To Set H22A1 Timing Belt?
Hey guys, so I tried searching couldnt find any help.
So pretty much Im trying to replace my timing belt on my H22a1, and I heard that these have an automatic tensioner, and that you need a special tool to losen it or something.
Does anyone know about this?
Also does anyone have a guide or picture on how to set it and is it possible to change thee TB without the "special tool"? thanks.

I'll look it up on alldata. You can rent most "special tools" from autozone.
My GFs jetta manual said you needed a "special tool at the dealership" to change the headlight bulbs. That special tool- your bare hand.

you are supposed to use a special tool. The auto tensioner is a hydraulic unit and quite powerful. You are to remove it from the engine, then remove a service bolt out of the tensioner. You then insert a small screw driver into the service hole and turn to compress the tensioner. Sounds simple enough, but getting the service bolt back in the tensioner and then getting the unit back on the motor without having the tensioner rebounding on you is very challenging. It is also full of hydraulic oil so you have to try not to spill any while fiddling with the thing. The purpose of the special tool is to keep the tensioner in compressed mode while you work. I have done it a ghetto way, using a hose clamp.
Many will tell you the auto tensioner can fail causing engine damage. The H23A engine came with a manual adjuster kit that can be used on the H22 which is waaaay more simple and safe to use. I now use this and recommend it. You can but the kit with new honda parts for under $100.

I'm sure it could be done without the tool, but it would be quite difficult. You have to keep the auto tensioner locked in place while setting the timing belt, and then you pull the tool out once everything is installed and you've verified everything is at TDC. It basically looks like a big 'C' bracket (but with straight sides) that goes around the tensioner. I believe Honda no longer sells these on their own; they only come with the kit, but I would check with your local dealership to be sure; they are only around $15 and well worth it if you can get it and want to re-use your tensioner. Of course, if you are replacing your t-belt, you should be replacing the tensioner as well. The auto tensioner was also updated, so if you are running a stock VT, the newer tensioners should work fine without any reliability issues.

Re: How To Set H22A1 Timing Belt?
The two cams have the "up" mark on them put them up and make sure the other notches are directly parallel to each other and that they are aligned with the head/valve cover gasket area it should look like this cam1(-UP-) cam2(-UP-) make pretend the up is the top notch and the other two lines are the notches when the cams are aligned as in up will be straight up. The crank one is easy it has the arrow pointer on the block and on the crank gears. Now the balancer shaft is tricky but easy there is a bolt behind the block where the water pump is located but alittle under it take it off and insert a screwdriver in so that the rear balancer is lock when you spin it. The other one has a line on the gear and a line on the shaft put the line on the shaft with the arrow on the block. That should have your timing set.
