Disable Airbags
I'm taking a trip from NY to FL and I have to seat a child in the front passenger seat. Does anyone know how to disable the airbags on a 2001 Civic?

Did the '01's not come with the automatic disabler integrated into the seat?
My '05 Had it and my Mustang has it too... you set a certain amount of weight in the passenger seat, and it shuts the airbag off.

No, its not really against the law to disable any airbag system, especially the passenger airbag.
Airbags = SRS = Supplemental Restraint System. Seatbelts are the primary restraint system.

Re: Disable Airbags (em2!kid)
So I would need to disconnect the battery first? My problem then would be that I don't have the code for the radio. I disconnected my battery once before and I had to call all over creation to find out where my car was originally sold from and they had the code to get the radio back on but now I can't find it. I guess it would be better to have no air bag then to have my radio though!

you HAVE to disconnect the battery any time you mess with the air bags. If you dont, and you cross 2 live wires you could trigger the bag to deploy. If you only want the passenger side off, you'll probably have to go under the dash and unplug it. Or put the kid in the back seat...

Re: Disable Airbags (lmharkin)
You can get the radio code from your Honda dealer with your VIN.
Definitely disconnect the negative terminal your battery first and wait a few minutes for the backup power in the SRS control module to be used up. You don't want to accidentally set off the airbag while you fiddle with the airbag module connector in the back of the glove compartment.
There are instructions on how to disarm the passenger airbag in the Hayes Repair Manual if you have one.

srs unit can be localted at the bottom of the dash on the floor board behind the center console/radio area. you will see all the yellow wires/plugs going to it. also like everyone has said, take your neg. cable off for 5-10mins so you dont accidentally deploy airbags.
