I have a 2.5" high flow cat on now and its still "raspy".
I had the exhaust guy run just 2.5" mandrel bent piping after the cat so no resonators.
Then hooking up to a Magnaflow 2.5" in/out...

Buddy had the "not going into gear" problem and ended up being his throw out bearing.
Seems to be multiple problems on this thread.
Just check off as you go.

I would say ONLY tune it open header if you are going to trailer/tow to the track.
The car will run either too rich or too lean for the ECU.
Now if no trailer/tow then redo your exhaust to 2.5 from...

Upgrading the valve train for stage 2 cams is a good idea.

I like to use Port Flow for the VT.

If cash is the issue, why not CTR cams for a mild build?

Turbo would be cool.

I tuned my GSR at 7psi.

Keep the CTR cams. The duration on them are not too bad. Up grade the whole valve train. (Valves,springs/retainers)

I typically stay at least 2-3 cars distance.

Also 80 MPH is still considered speeding. Try to stay between 65-70 MPH.
