pull out all interior trim in the trunk, down to bare metal. Coat the entire interior of the trunk with baby powder. Close the trunk and spray water all over. Search for traces or trails of water...

This.

I Also had vibration upon accleration which was my axles. I went through 2 sets of brand new (aftermarket) axle assemblies before I installed a set which were ok.

Yeah... they go for very good money, especially in the condition your's is in. There is a website out there just for classic Hondas. It's a classifieds. I'll try to look it up for ya.

I dont know why I am thinking this, but.... It may possible be the combination switch. It's a long shot, but try jiggling it to see if anything changes.

Did he pull the oil jet plug on the block? Also you said it ran great for 6 months. Was this when you had it or after the your buddy had it? It's too vague to tell when it ran well.
