Here is a project by Kevin on the aero myths of driving a pick-up with the tail-gate down:

and a picture showing the scale of the tunnel here in Ottawa. Big!

I can't wait to read the artical!! I hope you get enough people for the project.
just to add a few ideas:
1) how well do roof wings work? Maybe they work better for FWD cars because they can be placed slighely in front of the rear wheels = some of its force goes to the all important front tires.
2) Air-Dam Vs Air-Dam with splitter
3) Vents in rear bumper cover reduce drag?
4) Can side mirrors be used to generate downforce?
5) Does having the rear of the car 1-2" higher than for front generate better downforce?
6) Do hood louvers really reduce drag?
7) how close do you need to be for an effective draft behind you typical honda race car?

Anyway, I'm currently talking with Mr.E.G., Kiwi from Special Project Motorsports and Geoff at Full-Race on aero parts for the EG.
SPM has an aero package for the integra that may be adaptable to the EG according to Kiwi.
Geoff said their civic aero project is on permanent hold as of right now due to lack of interest and a flux of new orders for their turbo kits after sema.</TD></TR></TABLE>
Full-race is looking at making functional aero parts for EGs? that's pretty surprising.
I'd be curious to see the BYS rear duckbill on an EG in the windtunnel... That ungainly looking thing must create some kind of downforce you would think...

I tried calling them about pricing and wind tunnel availibility and only got some answering machines. Maybe tomorrow I'll be able to talk with someone there. If you know anyone who would like to test there, please let me know.

I think all your suggestions are good ones. If anyone wants to test one or more of those options it would be fine. The only option that we probably wont get to test is number 7. And if we tested item 2, it would be beneficial to test the stock fascia, then airdam only (maybe a couple of settings of different airdam heights), and then airdam with full splitter. And of course, there are all the tests with splitter and airdam at different settings the airdam height.

Re: Who wants to test their car in the Wind Tunnel? (Johnny Mac)
i say we test some of the different body kits out there on the market that claim to be functional. J's Racing and C-West comes to mind. i want to say Mugen too but IIRC they actually wind tunnel test their kits so it might be redundant and a waste of time.

is this their new smaller scale tunnel?
i sat in on a cup car test session one night in the big one, and it was ok. dont expect to be impressed by windows overseeing the car and smoke though. you basically sit in a room and wait for an excel sheet from a projector to go up on the wall. then make changes and do more of the same.

Re: Who wants to test their car in the Wind Tunnel? (dfoxengr)
There is only one wind tunnel in Mooresville, it's a full scale tunnel. However, it's considered different because the design of the tunnel is radically different than that of conventional tunnels like langley or the other full scale tunnels because Mooresville doesn't use giant fans that take up to 15-20 minutes just to get up to speed. It uses a series of smaller fans that get up to full speed in roughly a matter of seconds to a minute and a half depending on the speed you want iirc. So making changes and retesting is made much quicker and your downtime during your costly tunnel time is kept to a minimum. Should be a good place for this type of test with multiple cars in a finite amount of time.

well when i was there, they were building a smaller, slower-speed tunnel (90mph) or so right next to the big one. this was about a year ago.
thats the A2 tunnel that the thread creator is referring to, and the one they'll be using it seems.

Dammit! I would be down but im abotu 10,000 miles away right now. I am extremely interested in CRX aero though..
If this opportunity comes up again im definitely there!

This is a brilliant opportunity. ive not heard of anything like this in the UK. Its something im very interested in- as im sure alot more people are also.
Im planning on making some carbon fibre aero bits (eg. rear diffuser .etc), it would be brilliant to know how the theory works put into practice on the car itself.

If I could make it with my CRX, I'd want to see what effects all the different spoilers have, especially the flush mount SiR...
I would also like to see how the CD (coefficient of drag) is affected by the mugen kit for the JDM front end..

seems like the interest in this is building as it should this is a great price and very beneficial to the racer

Re: (niterida)
So far, there have been at least ten people who are interested in wind tunnel testing their cars. We have a couple of integras, a couple of eg's, even a couple of WRX's and STI's. I would like to get no more than two different types of cars for each day's testing so that more can be learned from all the possible modifications that can be done to one platform. Right now, it looks like we will possibly have two integras and two EG's for the first day of testing. If I could find four integras and four EG's, I would stay for two back-to-back days of testing for these cars. So if you are interested and have one or the other of these two cars, please let me know very soon as I will be putting the package together for all who attend. I really would like some CRX's for a future test as well, so please let me know if you have one of these with different aerodynamic components. I have prototype wings that you can use if you would like.
I have a ADS 7.5" chord, 48" span wing for moderate downforce and low drag.
I have a ADS 8.5" chord, 48", 54", 60" span wing for high downforce
I am making 11.5" chord, 60" span wing for very high downforce (WRX, EVO, ect.)
I can make another size if you are interested in testing it to balance your car.
I will also have wing mounts that are completely adjustable for set-back, height, and angle of attack for most cars. I will also have one for the CRX's due the limited space for the mount on the hatch.
Also, for those who sign up soon, I can provide other participating sponsors products as soon as I get confirmation as to what will be supplied. Stay tuned and get signed up soon. I will list the people and their car who have signed up later in the week (per their approval since I don't want to give out their information if they wish to be anonymous).

Re: (1slowcivic)
I would be prepared to try it...
We will probably take two integra's, with various Aero pkgs. We have several differnt wing mounts, and the ability to fabricate to suit if we have time.

Kiwi,
Are you shipping the cars to North Carolina, or are you working with someone on the east coast for this project. If these are all unique cars, thats great and we'll have four integras. Please let me know as soon as possible so we can work out all the logistics. Thanks

Re: (Johnny Mac)
I wish I could afford to take advantage of this opportunity. I made a rear diffuser and belly pan for the mid-engine GSR last winter.......
and would love to be able to test it in a wind tunnel. It's made of ABS plastic, which didn't hold up to the heat in my application, but would probably work ok on a stock Integra with minor mods for fit and mounting. If someone participating in John's wind tunnel event would like to try it out, I would be willing to make it available.
More pics of the diffuser available here, here, and here.
Cheers,
Dave
