Thanks for the lecture grandpa, but without context or proof, that picture does in fact show several signs of a hack job. But I guess coming into a discussion already after the pic has been (mostly) verified, gives you the 20/20 hindsight to look down on those who commented when its validity was questionable.

wow there are alot of FUCKED up posts in this thread...
people posting disrespectful and just plain rude things about this photo
of a man losing his LIFE
then the people who just assume it must be fake cuz it's too gnarly..
sorry that photo is obviously real,
I think you guys have absorbed too many hollywood flics,
things will happen to look bizzare when crazy **** happens in real life.
I see no signs of photoshopping, and the signs you guys think you do see,
are just you confusing compression artifacts or depris and such for something that it is not..
Would be good if it was fake.. unfortunately.

I know Gualter Salles is a real Brazilian driver...he was a competitive Indy Lights driver and has shown flashes of brilliance in backmarker equipment in Champ Cars (I think he was the fastest Ford qualifier at Long Beach in 1997).

Also, when a body is thrown in the air, it usually straightens out due to centrifugal force. Maybe that's why it looks like a Superman pose. I've never taken a physics class so I could be wrong.

The photo posted above is supposedly from Reuters and the track is Autódromo Internacional Orlando Moura at Campo Grande in Brazil.
The student was treated immediately by Dr. Dino Altmann (race doctor) but he passed away at Campo Grande hospital. Altmann is supposed to be one of the chief medical officers of that Brazilian stock car series and the medical director of the Grand Prix of Brazil (chief liason to Dr. Watkins). EDIT: Dr. Altmann is actually the medical director of the Interlagos track, not just of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Here's another shot that supposedly happened a few moments before.
The crash supposedly occured at the end of the front straight.
I also found an article on Mark Blundell's official website. Some of you may know Blundell as a former McLaren driver in Formula 1 and a multiple winner for the PacWest Racing Group Champ Car team.

As quoted from the article...
"Salles was clearly shaken by the incident, which began when his car was contacted by that of Ninô Figueiredo. The Brazilian was reported to have been in tears even before climbing out of his car, having realised the scale of the situation.
"I don't have the words to express the effect this accident has had," he said, "My feelings and prayers go to Raphael's family."
(... Mine too.)
It is a sad day when someone dies in a motorsports related incident. In some way, shape, or form it effects us all. Sometimes enthusiam supersedes common sense or if nothing else the perception of being able to "react in time".
Chance: If Salles' car had been a little further down the path, we might be talking about the shots from the perspective of Nino.
As a 4th-string (quarterback) photographer at work / hobbiest, I'm taking this message to heart.

Re: weee... interesting action shot. (emwavey)
Condolances to the photographer's friends and family.
Having worked many a flag station, the yellow flagger is looking the right way and it is not his to flag. The other guy should be facing the "yellow flagger" watching for incoming traffic and protecting the yellow flagger. Neither of which is responsible for watching out for a photographer (who is usually moving from place to place).
The photographer was in a place that was off limits. The other guy should have reported it and had the guy moved. The other guy seems to be out of place to protect the "yellow flagger". A bunch of circumstances that added up to fatality.

You're always welcome, sonny but I came to my own conclusions about the image's authenticity about 6 posts down the thread before I had the benefit of your additional research - about 10 seconds after I read...

I came to my conclusions about the questionable taste of some other posters' responses - after they clearly DID have confirmation that this happened - a few posts later. Hence my comment.

Re: (Knestis)
The photographer was probably in the "camera zone". Looking through a viewfinder of a camera or video camera usually makes the person feel "removed" from the scene that is being recorded.
It's like watching something on TV.

Re:
I'd like to welcome everyone to two years ago .... I've seen this same pic countless times over the past 2 years, yet have never seen it debated till now.
Either way, the guy died and that's sad. Think about it next time you photog guys find "the perfect spot" ..... I'd hate for this to happen to anyone else.
