Re: The strip down...auto-x ST class build.
I understand that could suck.
Tomorrow is the big day, last night I rolled the fenders, tonight I'm putting some fresh brake pads on up front and I'll be ready.
Turned out my cat was 1/2 plugged, I stole the one from my 4dr and gained like 30hp lol. The old one was bad enough that the exhaust pressure at WOT was pushing apart the exhaust at the header/cat flange and blowing exhaust up into the engine bay behind the intake mani!
I honestly don't expect to do all that well, being I have basically less than a week of seat time in the car as a daily, and everyone else has been running all season...
Being in a gang of Subaru's, a newer GTI, and new Civic Si, I'll hope that my ~800# lighter ride will keep me in the hunt.

Our club groups several classes together into 6 total classes, being C6(slowest) to C-1(fastest). I am in C5.
Probably the best way to do this is I'm linking the club site here, have a look at the Event 5 and 6 registration list. Just noticed a Miata signed up too. He's E-stock. I'm going armed tomorrow with the stock/st stx etc rule book

Re: The strip down...auto-x ST class build.
results....well..the course was exactly the Opposite of what I expected. High speed corners and slolems with 2 nasty "near steering lock" turns as well. My first run the timer malfunctioned...2nd run was clean and landed me 2 second back from the leader on a 1:10 ish course. 3rd run the pressures crept up on my front tires and the car was all over the place, hit lots of cones.
The afternoon session I played with tire pressures more and chopped a second off my time, next run was even better(my best by almost 2 seconds) but just nicked a cone. We were being ran in smaller groups much faster, and I was dumping water on my brakes between runs to keep them cool. Leader also improved 8/10ths.
Last run was the one, hit all the turns right and had it where I wanted..came thru the finish line and......timer malfunction
I was immediately ran to the start line with no time for brake watering, went out for another run. About 2/3rds of the way thru the brakes turned to mush and I had curls of smoke coming off of both front brakes...making the brakes into "poor mans ABS" .
Despite that I cut about 1/2 second off of my "cleanest" time, and done for the day.
Overall the day was pretty screwed up. A novice driving a new STI on street tires killed all but a couple of the fastest cars at the event. Both drivers sharing the 07 Legacy GT took top spots in C5, it was horribly hot so I didn't stay around for the rest of the results.
I do believe Trevor Mcdermott took home FTD and C1 1st in his 94 Si, and Dan Thomas in C2/Prepared-Mod class in his turbo Z6 92 Si, so honda's still took home some gold despite the attack of the 4wd "lemmings" lol.

Re: The strip down...auto-x ST class build.
I changed the pads friday night will new semi-metallics, nothing special though.
Last night a friend helped me and we dialed more negative camber into the car, and blead the brakes. I learned a valuable lesson, the fluid in the reservoir doesn't exactly mean the caliper end looks the same. We bled out some of the nastiest crap I have ever seen, and refilled the system with the valvoline brake fluid(gold bottle stuff). Today was much better and although I got the brakes hot they didn't fade this time.
I improved about 1-1/2 seconds today, we ran the same course backwards that I ran yesterday. I had one of the other drivers ride along with me to get an opinion of the cars setup, and while he praised the handling and braking he said there wasn't more than 1/2 second to be gained at the most...just didn't have enough motor to make anymore gains.
It turned out to just be a "big motor" course design.
The STI was very quick again, Mcdermott's Civic again claiming FTD/CI win even over a formula ford. A 1st gen RX-7 with a ported 13B took C-2, and the Legacy GT drivers and Civic Si killed the rest of our class by almost 5 seconds. The miata, WRX, MR2, GTI, and myself were all fairly close.
The sad part is that next month the runway we are using is getting a road punched thru the center of it, and it will be developed into commercial.
This weekend was the last races of our season, so my EX will return to DD duty and trying to improve the setup is pointless until next year...if we find another lot to use.
Overall I built up the car with what I had kicking around, bought some tires and had a good time throwing it around some cones.
We had a good time teasing the safety steward, who had threatened that anyone "4 wheels off" would be thrown out, then nearly did it himself(3 wheels off) along with another senior member who did go mow some lawn.
Over this winter I am hoping to complete the engine install into the 63 MG Midget and actually bring more than a knife to the gunfight next time being our classing structure sucks.

I tend to always do a complete flush with pad changes at the minimum, nasty crap in brakes lines is no good! Probably felt better too.
You can always trek down to Seattle and take the ferry over for the Bremerton SCCA events ... Or Packwood, but that's even farther.
