Default Silverado V8 8.1l or the Silverado Diesel

I have the gas version and get 10mpg on every tank as teh average. Does anyone have the diesel and keep records? Im thinking of switching but I wanted to see what the opinion was and the cost benefit.

Thanks

My dad used to own that same truck, he averaged 9.1, and 9.8 on the freeway. I loved the power, but the gas mileage SUCKS. i used to use it for towing.

He has since sold it and now owns a desiel. On average he gets, and so do i becuase i bought a desiel, 16 and 19 mpg. 16 is in "city driving" actually country driving for us though, and 19 is on the freeway as long as you keep it below 75, and even at 75 the gas mileage sucks compared to going 70.

The 8.1l was a 01 or 02 with the allision but it had the 5 speed. Both the new desiel's have the 6 speed tranny, which i do think helps greatly in mileage. We have an 03 3500 desiel and it gets around 14.5 in the city and 16 on the freeway. When they switched to the 6 speed they also (it appears) made changes to the motor, the 5speed desiel doesn't rev much, and the 6 speed, has I think 1,000 more RPM's.

For me and my dad, we needed/liked the power that the deseil and 8.1l gave (desiel obviously having more), and since both cost close to the same when buying new we opted for the desiel.

the desiel got us better gas mileage, at the same or very close to the same price as premium gas, and don't have to smog it every two years which is another 90 or so dollars and hassel you don't have to deal with

Run far-far away. Ford doesn't even like the 6.0L Powerstroke.

Cummins with a 6sp
or
Duramax with an Allison. &lt;- Look this hard, there is a reason why you never see them for sale.

Oh and there is about 25% more energy in a gallon of diesel than a gallon of gas.

Things to consider:
1) Up-front cost is typically higher on a diesel
2) Oil changes typically cost 3x more on a diesel
3) Fuel costs are higher than gasoline (assuming regular, perhaps $.40/gal. more)

That said, work out the difference over 100,000 miles. My sales manager and I worked it out (on used vs. used) at the last dealership I worked for, and it was cheaper to run the gasser.

Of course, resale is lower, but you end up spending less up front. YMMV.

I am impartial to diesel's if you buy and bulk and do your own oil changes then its pretty close to gassers in cost. Depedning where you live and if you look around you can find cheap places for diesel, I found a place local that sells diesel consistnatly for $2.40 when gas is the same price. Also if you buy Diesel in bulk you can buy Biodiesel certified fuel station cheaply or make it yourself for cheaper or convert to WVO and basically pay for itself. I think towing wise Diesel are better but I am using mine for a DD which is a pain.

Without a doubt, go with the Duramax. We've had our since '03, and haven't had any problems (yet). The torque it has for towing is more than enough. Now that the Duramax has the new LLY engine (over 600lb/ft of torque), it's even better.

Go with the Duramax!

if it matters, i didn't really like my 04 6.0L powerstroke crewcab F250....i only got 8-10mpg towing, but i tow a 20' enclosed trailer at 80mph..... my chevy 5.3L gas truck got 8-9mpg towing the same trailer, so it was very close..... not sure why.... the F250 was way heavier and much more stable, but the mileage was nothing spectacular.

i got 15mpg running 80mph to VIR with no trailer at all..... which is probably 2mpg better than the chevy would have gotten....

goodluck..... I now have a V10 F250 Gas...

Thanks guys!

I worked it out to being 98,000 miles based on a stable gas price and including oil changes.. I suppose I'll stay gas !

maybe its different were you live but for me, diesel has been the same price if not cheaper then premium gass.

Now you already own the 8.1l so the extra 5,000 or so you had to pay for it has already been taken into account. they charge around 6,000 for the diesel i think so if you looking to buy new and want the power the diesel is the way to go.

I just drove 130 miles, and my average mileage was 19.5mpg

hi.

just wondering; why are you using premium gas in the 8.1?

we use regular 87 in both of ours, and they run perfect. just got 10.1 mpg on the way home from Summit yesterday; 75-80 mph towing an enclosed trailer rig.

i love the trucks (they are both my dad's; he picked them out and uses them for a little bit of horse trailer towing).

Gases prices are suppose to spike up to over $3.00 between june, july and the first 2 weeks of august, Diesel may be the better way to go this year

Last year, when gas prices were over $3.00.... so was diesel... and it took a LOT longer for the diesel prices to fall after the gas prices did.

Depends where you live, Constistently I can get lower price as well as have the opition of Biodiesel (cheaper) or WVO (Free)

todd</TD></TR></TABLE>Yeah, no kidding. You can tow with 87 and have zero issues with my truck too. It's recommended to use 89 when towing or hauling, but using premium is strongly warned against in the owners manual, in any situation.

Anyway, diesel saves time, not money. Depends which you want to save more of. Spending less time at the pump and off the road might be worth it to some people. Me, I can go 400+ miles at 75 without stopping on one tank of gasoline, and I always have to take a **** waaaay before the 300 mile mark, so I wouldn't save any time anyway

Greg: The new ultra-low sulphur diesel formula's max is 15ppm, the old highway diesel's top side was 500. I have to wonder if the cost will be subsidized given the current political climate.
