Today's race was a total cluster ****. HC + Big Bore didn't work out at all this weekend.

I am sure every1 will put in their $0.02.

on the grounds of everyone was more friendly, the corner workers let me stand on the side rail and get the pictures that SCCA people would have been jumping up and down about.

Honestly I felt the general atmosphere was more relaxed and friendly! Nobody was **** talking their competitors and I dont think I heard the word "cheat" all day long!

Honestly, if "more relaxed" turns out to match the stories I've heard of near-fistfights, drivers standing helmetless on the track surface, and people punting one another and going unpunished...I'll take my racing with a side of seriousness.

I guess we'll see when folks get back tonight and tomorrow. All I've got to go on is a phone call...

I bet 90 percent of the corner workers working this weekend are SCCA members. I know because when I drive around on a cool down lap and wave to the corner workers at RA during a NASA event there are either SCCA members that I know or have worked a corner with at Road Atlanta. I bet turn seven has Hazel flagging it. Hazel's corner. Last event also saw Linda working a person who does a lot of registrar work in SCCA working turn 11/pit in. I am a member of both organizations but yep, an RE for a SCCA region. When you have entrant fields at SCCA events of 150, 250, or more sure it is going to be "more competitive". Events have to run pretty tight too with those numbers. But yes, NASA is pretty laid back. I am just bummed because I am doing yard work today instead of driving RA because my car is not back together yet. Dang it.

I witnessed some really sketchy stuff. A guy in a Mustang hit the wall at the top of the esses and spent the rest of the race chilling next to his race car. Part of that time he was faced away from the track right next to his balled up car, while the race was going on, within 10 foot of a corner worker on the other side of the fence who did not ever tell the guy to get off the track. Wow! Giles and I also saw a Camaro broadside a yellow Type R going down the back straight. We both wondered how that could happen accidentally. Turns out that it was not an accident. The guy did it intentionally, admitted to it in front of multiple witnesses, the incident was viewed my multiple witnesses and happened near a bucket. The incident was not even called in from that bucket. As of 7pm or so Sat the guy was still going to race on Sun. and at most received a little talking to from Jim. A guy purposely broadsides a guy at ~120 mph for no reason except that "some other Honda f'ed his race up", the incident is viewed by multiple witnesses and the guy admits he did it purposely and the Nasa-SE head gives him a little talking to. Uhh.... ok.

BTW, I have only ever run with NASA and I have really liked the organization up until now. As far as fistfights, what would you do if a guy tried to murder you at ~120 mph for no reason at all. I know what I would do if I even witnessed such an act of cowardice. I would offer to kick his *** for him..... he declined.

I don't know what I'd do. What I do know is that I'd expect my sanctioning body to do something non-zero.

As Karl, I like my racing with some seriousness. Racing kills people.
Friendly is great, really. But not when people are intentionally running into each other on straights.

Well, I did.
I also heard...
"I'll kick that ************* ***."
"I'm sick of Honda guys divebombing everybody."
"Maybe we should boycott."
"Because I''m not a coward ***** like you."

The fact that you think that day went really well pretty much sums it up.
Jon, the best thing you can do for NASA is to publicly be a big fan of SCCA. Seriously.

I just know I'll take serious and sane over casual and running into people out of spite and then getting into a fight.

No, I'm not making this up. The NASA guys ended up in almost a fistfight this weekend, over a sprint race, and had to be physically separated from one another.

Friendly?

I'll stick with serious.

What set up the whole scene was a f'ed up grid for the race. At least 2/3 of the field was on the false grid at least 15 min before the race start...and no officials placed any cars. Finally, a chinese firedrill attempt to grid the cars ensued moments before the race start with no positive results! The field was so screwed up that the officials just gave up and said "ahhh, what the heck, just go race boys" No 5 minute call... no 1 minute call... nothing, and then they turned us loose. The American Iron red 'mist car' that was sent out ahead of the top Hondas actually qualified about three rows behind us ...and, well it just gets uglier from there.

I'm pleased that the NASA SE gang learned from the grid mess on Saturday and executed perfect grid and release for Sunday. However, I'm terribly dissappointed that no disciplinary action was taken after Saturday's poor sportsmanship demonstration.
