Re: SAVE Road Atlanta! (MaddMatt)
This is serious! It happens all too often.
Morons build homes next to garbage dumps...and complain about the smell.
Morons build homes next to airports...and complain about the noise.
Morons build homes next to race tracks ...and complain about the noise, smell and rednecks.
It is quite possible that the new home owners could convince the county comissioners to mandate quiet hours on Sunday afternoon, Saturday morning, demand a 80db noise level, or shut the facility down completely.
Welcome to America, where any small group of morons can move mountains.

I guess I'm just too logical. I kinda scout those things out (dumps, airports, major highways) before I make the sinlge largest purchase I'll ever make. Duh!
Isn't Laguna still in operation???
It's not "the end" of RA, but it certainly could be "the beginning of the end"...

I'm afraid you're right. There has been a bunch of residential development around Road Atlanta over the past ten years; sooner or later our beloved track will be a golf course.

Re: SAVE Road Atlanta! (wildhorsesracing)
I guess it really depends on who buys the homes. I'm weird, I'd buy a house and rent it out to race fans or racers, not much different then a ski-lodge.
Heck the NJmotorsport project is planning to build condos inside the track.

This is exactly what happened to the best track in AZ (www.arizonamotorsportspark.com). You should take this seriously. It was a privately funded track that had all the zoning approvals and stuff before building. It was open for 2-3 years until several new developments went up around it. It wasn't long before people complained about the noise and traffic and voila!, the race track has been shutdown for over 2 years while the owner fights in court. Now we're stuck with our shitty drag strip track and our roval while a pristine, excellent road course sits dormant through years of litigation. It just defies reason that people would buy a house next to a race track, then complain about noise, but unfortunately they do.
Now, here's the real kicker. The race track literally backs up against an air force base, where they have jets taking off and landing constantly. Some of the residents there have even been trying (semi-successfully I've heard) to restrict the usage of the runways by the air force via noise complaints to the city council.

laguna's still in operation, but w/ crazy noise restrictions. I believe it's 92 dB for people who don't have tons of $$$$ to have the restriction lifted. Makes me wonder what those rich dummies do when there's a motoGP race, or champ car or WC race there.

Yeah, I've driven on a couple of those patches. The difference is amazing, but good lord is that stuff expensive. They spent millions of dollars just to do one little section of loop 101 in Phx.
I really hope that AMP can reopen one of these days. Even with a sound limit, I'd rather run there than our other tracks. Rumor has it the owner is looking at building a similar track out in buckeye, but at the rate Phoenix is expanding, it will only be a few years before the same thing would happen again. People are such pansies.

You need to make sure the local restaurants and hotels help out. They will be big losers if it gets shut down.

They tried to do the same thing at Beaverun.
The people complain about some noise but the businesses there are really profitable for the first time in years.

Re: SAVE Road Atlanta! (wildhorsesracing)
Damn, I live in Hall County. I'll look into this a little.
I wouldn't be too concerned with it though. 50 acres in that part of Hall county is peanuts for development, and a peanut developer going up against Don Panoz? That racetrack brings in real money to Hall county, and the commissioners aren't that stupid.
Also, I'm pretty familiar with Road Atlanta, and the area along the back straight, and turn 9 is already part of the track facility I think. I could be wrong about this though.

Re: SAVE Road Atlanta! (Lucid Moments)
I did my part. Sent this this afternoon:
"Dear Hall County Commissioners;
It is my understanding that rezoning is being considered to allow a high denisty residential development, "Park at Riverside", adjacent to the Road Atlanta property in Hall county. I wish to express my concern for residential development near one of the best road racing circuits in the world. My concern is that residents will not fully understand that property near a race track is a horrible place for a residence until after they've moved in. Complaints to the commissioners will follow until you are forced to change the track's operating proceedures, or close the track entirely to accomodate residents. This would have a severe economic impact on the hotels and merchants in Hall County.
I'm certain you have a clear understanding of the economic impact that large spectator events at Road Atlanta have on Hall County and the surrounding businesses, but you may not have a grasp on the impact of numerous amateur racing events held at Road Atlanta almost every weekend. Most events draw at least 150 - 200 participants plus event workers, family and friends that spend their money in Hall County. I have traveled 275 miles each way from North Carolina to participate in events at Road Atlanta 3-4 times each year since 1990. I've spent an average of $300 per weekend in Hall county hotels, resturants, and convenience stores during each event.
Please understand the total impact your decision will have on employees of Road Atlanta, thousands of racers that support both the facility and Hall County business where we collectively spend upwards of $50,000 per weekend.
Thank you!
Allan Haggai – Amateur Road Racer"
PS - anyone stupid enough to build a home next to a fuggin' race track should be beaten slowly to death with a rubber hose!
(Guys, feel free to use parts of... or all of my letter if it helps you compose a letter to send to the commissioners)

Re: SAVE Road Atlanta! (Track rat)
Be afraid, very afraid.
It happened to East Windsor Speedway (local circle dirt track) in Jersey a few years back.
The track had been there 30 years then $600K homes were built in 1996 about a mile away. Guess what, no more track.
The good news for RA, this is happening in Georgia (a red state). If it was The Peoples Republic of Jersey the dirty politicians would have already closed Road Atlanta.
Good Luck and be VERY Vocal!!!!!!!

Red or blue, the only pertinent color is GREEN.
