roll cage or roll bar?
I am starting to build my R and want to put a 4 point rollbar or cage in it. Ive heard about kinds that bolt in and kinda like the idea that I can remove it later if I wanted but is it as good as a welded in cage. Which brands and companies do you guys recommend I research. thanks for the help

Autopower bolt in or this guy: https://honda-tech.com/zerouser...14872 sells a very nice bolt-in 4 point bar that I like better than the autopower - better fitment, bigger baseplates.
I was happy w/ my autopower bar (bought it used - thanks dan!), and was easy to remove for sale time (now).

Re: roll cage or roll bar? (TheOne)
I had the autopower bolt-in roll bar in the R for a year or so. I was really happy with it and since I ran full interior in my autocross class I don't think I could have had a much better fit with a custom bar. HOWEVER, the autopower cage for the DC2 isn't all that impressive and it cuts into your interior space like you wouldn't believe. If you're going to put a cage in the R, even with full interior (more or less, depending on your class rules) I would never do anything other than a custom weld-in. My CRX is half bolt-in and half custom and I wish I had just paid the extra money up front right about now.

We need more info
-dedicated track car or street and track?
-gutted or keep the interior?
-might you ever want to put it back to stock?
-actual race car (and have you read the rules?) or HPDE?
A bolt-in 4-point bar is good for an HPDE/street car, since it gives you some rollover protection but doesn't put big steel bars too near the side of your head when you're driving down to McDucks.
I can't think of a racing series for an R that wouldn't require a 6-point cage.
You'll have to decide what you want to do first, and then ask.

Specifically to your question, I don't think you can buy an off the shelf bolt-in for your car that will offer you the performance benefits (especially the performance and eventualy expandability to full cage) like a well conceived/well executed custom roll bar. Properly thought through, it should be very easily made for roll bar now, roll cage later with very few sacrifices (far fewer than w/ an off-the rack bolt-in). Also, provided that the rockers (assume plastic) are not harmed during the welding, you will probably be left with merely some extra thick metal on the rocker panels (and wherever the rear mount points go). A sawzall and some spray on undercoating should do just a good a job of removing that you ever put rollover protection in the car.
Be warned though. Think hard about how much you want to do anything, be it welding or bolting to a car that on second thought you want to be able to undo. There are many things that can happen to a car on track that can be far less undone than bolting in/welding in a rollbar.
As far as places to go, go to some races in your area (specifically where the competition is the greatest) and ask questions - racers typically like to talk

I think a 4 pt. in a "daily driver" is an excellent idea if you're planning on attending track days. Just don't use "it" as an excuse to step over the limits... tip toe up to them.
In retrospect, I probably would have been happy putting a 4 pt bar in my former daily driver CRX to do track days for a few years. There's a benefit to being able to drive you car to and from a track day, and a benefit of driving your "race car" on the street.
When your ready to race, buy a race car that is already built. If you already have a tow vehicle, you might consider buying a car now. It's definitely a buyer's market.

Re: roll cage or roll bar? (emwavey)
my R is going to be street driven and set up for HPDE, I want to keep it streetable. I will probably have the roll bar in forever, unless I dont like it. this isn't my daily driver but its not a full race car either. Is there that much of a difference between a custom 4-point and a pre-made bolt in 4-point? the bolt in autopower looks good enough to me but this isn't for looks, I want it to really stiffen up the chassis. I want to keep the interior even though nobody will be in the back seats ever.

FWIW, I'm a fan of the Autopower products, for what they are (a simple straightforward & basic kit). Obviously now the car has a custom welded cage, but prior to that I've owned the 4-point roll bar and the 6-point roll cage kits. If your car is essentially a street/HPDE car, a 4-point (back-half) bar with diagonal and harness bar will be fine. Be prepared to cut up a few interior pieces and slice up the carpet.

The biggest benefit to having a rollbar is safety.
FWIW, Kirk also makes a nice 4pt. bolt-in. I don't think you could go wrong with either choice.

doesn't matter....not like you can devalue a rollbar.....

Oh, SURE you can. Just use it.
A friend had an Autopower cage in a Rabbit a bunch of years ago when he rolled it down the hill into 3A at Seattle. When we undid the last bolt holding the back section in, it went BOING! - and went back to its original, un-tweaked shape enough so that it got bolted into a new shell.
