Question for f1 fans.
I am interested in going to my first f1 race this season. My two logical options are canada and indy. The chances of going to both are slim to none. Which would you go to????? Reasons why????? cost, travel time, things to do after watching the race, ect are all things to think about. I am looking for the overall most fun place to go for the weekend.
thanks in advance

Re: (triple_s1x)
I've been to the Canadian GP the last 3 years. Turns 1 and 2 is where you want to be and the closest you can get to the cars is just after turn 2 where they are getting on full throttle. Ear plugs are a must since you're literally 10 feet from the track. Only caveat is that you need grandstand passes to get to that area so either buy gs tix, sneak in with a crowd, or near the end of the race (~10 laps to go no one checks anymore). 1 and 2 is also where most people break through the fence to rush the track after the finish so they can get a spot just under the podium.

Re: Question for f1 fans. (MassScene)
I have been to both (in fact did both the same year in 2005).
Indy has a lot of positives. Overall, it is cheaper. The hotels, race tickets, etc are all much less expensive than Montreal. It is also easier to get the hotels as you can stay anywhere in the metro area and get to the track easy. Parking is also easy, as is track access.
The track and city environment leaves little to be desired though. I recommend turn 1 (H or J) stand if you want to see a lot of action. You get to hear them go from 200+ to 60 into turn 1. You get to see all of the turn 1 mess on the first lap as well. Plus, you can see nearly a quarter of the track (corners 1-5).
I have sat in H, J, NW Vista and North Vista in previous years. However, in 2005, I sat in the new corner 10 terrace. We sat there because of the close proximity to the track. It is literally right there. You can see the entrance to the hairpins and are sitting on the short straight after them. You hear them go through gears 1-4 until they brake for corner 11. It is great for being close to the action! There is great access to the south-side parking lots and you are very close to the vending area for food and merchandise. I highly recommend these seats.
In Montreal, I sat in section 12, which is corner 1. Avoid this area like the plague! Sure, you get to see the first lap corner 1 action, but you see very little of the track and all at fairly low speed. Plus it is a looooooooooong walk from the underground and has terrible people traffic issues. After qualifying in 2005, it took us 2.5 hours to get off of the island! I would suggest section 21 or 15. These are in the hairpin, where you get to see them going from max speed, to slow speed, back up the gears to max speed again. You see a lot of action here. It is also very close to the bridges off of the island.
Montreal was a great experience. The nightlife, eye candy and overall European feel is great. You truly feel that you are in Europe. The biggest downfall is cost. For a basic 4-night weekend, expect to spend around $1500.00 for two people with airfare (depending where you are from). Hotels under $300 per night are tough to find (downtown, where you want to be), race tickets are expensive, food is pricey and cab fares are high.

When I went to Montreal a few years back, we took Southwest Airlines to Manchester and then rented the cheapest rental car we could find to drive across the border to Montreal. Turned out cheaper than flying directly to Montreal. Drive was nice too; like throwing in a roadtrip.
Stayed in a very nice B&B in Montreal outside of downtown but very close to subway station for easy access to the island. B&B was pretty cheap too, but split the cost with a few other people - something like $60 bucks a night per person. We had a stocked kitchen, dining room (outdoor and indoor), living room with a library of books and videos, 2bedroom, free cable and internet. The place was like an IKEA showroom, but we didn't spend too much time hanging out there as the party was downtown in the city.
Our seats were in Grandstand 31, forget what turn it is but it's a hard brake under a bridge and then right to left. Had very good action; I'll try to post up some video later.
Total trip cost (air, board, car rental, grandstand, and spending cash) for me was around $1100.

Re: Question for f1 fans. (JamesS)
Oops, I mis-typed. I meant $1500.00/person!
My breakdown, from memory was:
Aifare=$300.00 (from Milwaukee to Montreal)
Hotel=$400/night x 4 nights / 2 people=$800 (Marriott Downtown)
Race Tickets for entire weekend=$250.00
Cab/Subway/tips for people at hotel and cabbies=$150
I spent close to a grand on food, merchandise and in the casino! It was a once-in-a-recent-lifetime weekend though, so I went nuts. I gave up an entire season worth of R-comps for 1 weekend in Montreal!
Monaco in 2008 will be the next nutty weekend though!

Re: Question for f1 fans. (MassScene)
I did the USGP this year for less than $350 US. That included fuel from PA, all food, all 3 days at the track ($125), and a souvenir shirt, hat, and program ($75). I did have a free place to stay though - a hotel room would have probably added another $200 to the trip, but you could subtract some from the food budget if you get a continental breakfast.

Re: Question for f1 fans. (Targa250R)
I have gotten better responses then i hoped for! thank you all! As of right now it seems I am going to indy because of the pricing. The only reason I want to go to canada is for the nightlife. Do I spend and extra 500-900 dollars just so I can get drunk at canadian bars??????? Hmmmmmmmm Canadian women................. i dont know yet I got more research to do. thanks guys

Re: Question for f1 fans. (MassScene)
anyone ever sit in the northwest vista deck or one of the penthouse seats. I figure I am saving so much money going to indianapolis that I mine aswell splurge and get the best seat in the house. I was looking at the sections h,j and terrace at corner 10 prices and they arnt bad. 85.00-105.00 for the 3 day weekend!!!! cheaper than redsox tix!

Re: Question for f1 fans. (MassScene)
As one who has been to both, i'm going to choose Indy. Here's why:
-70% of the people in montreal speak French, and all the signs are French
-Montreal is too ******* crowded. You are stuffed onto a subway with a bazillion people, then have to walk like 3 miles with a bazillion people to get to the island where the track is (the metro doesn't even come out near the track). I felt like I was at ******* disneyworld with all the people.
-Indy tickets are cheaper. The good seats are $85 + $25 fri/sat. The shitty seats at montreal are $195 CDN for the weekend (like $190 US), and the good seats (hairpin and senna curve) are $360 weekend!!!
-For Canada, you have to sit in the same seat all weekend. I was at the track for hours and only saw the cars for like 7 seconds each going through 1 turn...lame!
-The viewing in canada blows. The track is very narrow...and trees are on all sides. The only good viewing is at the senna curve, but it's too ******* expensive. Indianapolis you can sit high up in turn 1 (turn 4 on the oval) and see half the track. You can see the cars from the frontstretch to hulman boulevard.
-The souvenirs in canada suck. There were hardly any vendors, and when there were they were all expensive. At indy (especially outside the front stretch and turn 13) there are a CRAPLOAD of vendors including speedgear that can get you anything you want ever
Canada
-GREAT nightlife and parties
-City is beautiful, especially the waterfront
-Met DaveSi there haha
BUT
-EXPENSIVE
-Shitty viewing
-Same seat all weekend
-Everyone speaks french
-Not many f1 merchandise vendors
-Crowded metro
-Long walk to the track
Indy
-Great viewing
-Cheap
-Not as long to walk
-Lots of vendors outside of the track
-Everyone speaks english

Thanks for more info! It seems indianapolis is the place for me! The only thing that seems better about canada is the nightlife but I barely go out and drink here!

That's nothing man!
Plus 70 Eur for Fri-Sat tix.
The USGP is super cheap. Not my first choice for an F1 race because the atmosphere is just not like it is elsewhere, but if you are on a budget, it is one of the best.
