Pictures of "The Replacement" and a long story on what lead up to it....
Well for those who do not know me, I am a car geek! Yeah, join the club right....
I started SCCA Rally last season with a 90 SI and we did very well together!!
She (The Mighty Civic) can even be seen in the July issue of Sport Compact Car, they did a very nice feature on her...
In February we were invited to the SCCA National Club Rally Championship in Salem Missouri. The top 3 in each class in each division get the invite and we decided that it would be worth the 3600 mile round trip to give it a shot..
Well the mighty civic did not let us down, at the end of the first day we had placed 5th overall and had beaten the pants off of many awd cars with a ton more horse power... We were also 1:19 up on the 01-02 national champion for our class (Randy Baily, a total class act!!). When day 2 came around we started 7th on road and quickly moved up to 6th after a reseed. We were doing well and it was a lot of fun being up with this group of people, many of which were driving there pants off because they did not want this little Honda to beat them... After another scorcher of a stage where we spent some time in the dust of a great gentleman named Mike Hurst (driving a very well prepared 5.0 mustang with gobs of HP) he decided that we should go in front of him at the next stage start..
Soooo we start the next stage (which was a stage we had run the opposite direction earlier that day) with everything going really well.. The car was feeling great and aside from some intercom problems we had been faced with all weekend, we still managed to be over 2 min up in class... I was going after a top 5 overall and while I was not pushing hard, I was not letting up either...
About 5 miles into the stage, my navigator (Kathryn Hansen, a fantastic and **** person who is perfect as a navigator) calls a "Double caution, Fast right over a low water bridge" (a low water bridge was used to describe several different varieties of crossings over creek beds for this rally. This particular bridge was an actual bridge about 4 or 5 feet off the creek bed, made of concrete without any side rails) I made my approach and got a little wide.. This caused me to drop the left rear wheel off the bridge, I was still on line so I was hoping that I could either pop back up on the bridge or at least hop up the bank on the other side.. Well I did not pop up and the bank on the other side had a rather large boulder embedded in it.. We hit this rock flat out in third gear..... I remember the whole car being air borne with the tail straight up and just looking out the windshield at the ground passing us by... I closed my eyes when the glass started to fly so I am not entirely sure how many revolutions we made.... I do know that we drug the nose slightly when we were pointing at the ground, this caused the car to spin a little as we were doing the end over end and the first real impact was the right rear corner into a berm from when they built the road... This impact really absorbed most of the inertia, the berm was somewhat soft and I am thankful it was there... We then barrel rolled in the air and landed on the roof..
The first thought to come to my mind was "****, Mike and that 5.0 are right behind us and we are lying right in the groove.." I asked Kathryn if she was ok, she said yes, I asked her again and she was repeated YES... I unbuckled and dropped on my head... Crawled out of the car and grabbed the "OK" sign and one of my triangles (I did not want to end the stage if we were both ok) ran up the road to the beginning of the corner and made sure that everyone slowed down.. (I had conveniently placed that boulder right into the apex of the left that was after the bridge..)
There I was, pissed that I threw away the National Championship.... The car was leaking all of its blood all over the road.. And ****.........
Well I am finally getting over it, I think the SCC article has brought me out of my Rally depression...
The new car (an 88 std) is now done being painted and now the reconstruction process begins...
Many of you know me from around the NW, especially old timer's in the autocross scene.. My father and I started doing Autocross in an Orange 1200 civic around 1990.. I stopped autocrossing regularly around 4 or so years ago and now dad and Kathryn (my navigator who is also my dads girlfriend) run the 1200 all over the stinking place....
Anyhow, I thought I would post this as a form of therapy..

the cage looks even more incredible than the last one.
I take it you aren't going to make the dryad/shitepoke? We already sent in our entry fees, but there's a chance we won't make it either, if we can't get a replacement fender somewhere.

Re: (driftin4)
yeah, thanks for letting us borrow it.
ONE of the problems ended up being a bad connection for the #3 injector (same cylinder that had the spark problem). Another problem may have been that dizzy you swapped us. Now all that's left is to plug an oil hole in the head. Should run great after that.

Steve sold the "old and busted" and "new hotness" to me. New car should make its debut at Oregon Trail in April.
Heading to 100 AW in Missouri with the Integra this weekend.
Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions about building Honda rally cars.

Orange Civic and Green Integra, pretty much the same
1/4" Aluminum (forget which kind) for the front--engine, sump, suspension protection.
3/16" UHMW (Ultra High Melocular Weight Plastic--plastic cutting board type material) for floors, sills.
1/8" Aluminum for fuel tank.

For the last couple of weeks the article has been on HondaTuning.com's front page.
