Default Oil to use for Road Racing?

recommended honda says 5w30 for my 98 B18C1 motor.

but i just wanted to get a real answer from the road racing community what would be recommended to use at the track.

my first track day will be the 24th at Streets of willow and atm i'm using Full Synthetic 5w30 from Castrol, but i hear otherwise from one shop owner to go back to Non-synthetic(they said the oil is too thin could cause rod knocks? not sure the validity in that but others say 5w40 Full synthetic. my motor is all stock except bolt ons. not really sure who to believe, but i just want to make sure my motor will be safe at the track so i want an overall opinion from the guys(you!) who road race the most and have experience.

Everyone will have an opinion, few will have hard evidence to back it up. Better that you just pick something off the shelf and keep it at a reasonable operating temperature and change it often.

I use Motul 8100 5W40
some of my friends use Motull 300V 5W40

I guess as long as you do a oil change before the event & your oil temp is not too high then it is ok

i would say full synthetic over conventional anything...

i would also use something SL rated or older - as it still has zinc.

taking these 2 things into consideration, i run Royal Purple HPS 10w40 in my hatch.

An oil with a high HTHS rating (the higher the rating, the less the oil will shear at higher temps) will work well for track. I use Rotella T6 (5w-40) in my Prelude track car.

Do you have oil pressure and oil temp gauges?

Dyno gtx, vr1, rotella all used. All 10 40 (the rotella was 5 40). Never had an oil related failure. No oil cooler, 300° oil temps in the pan.

amsoil 10w30 dominator

this oil was tested by a friend after one of our races by one of those oil testing companies....apparently tested very well with him running over 300 degrees in his mr2.

I don't like that shop owner.

bobstheoilguy.com - Good info on how to choose the right oil based on oil pressure per 1k rpms and the heat the oil will see.

I run Valvoline VR1 (DINO) straight 30 in the colder months (April/May) and I'm not seeing oil temps above 220f. During the hot summer months I change to the Amsoil European formula in 5w-40 because I will see up to 260f temps almost never more. My oil cooler works pretty well.

castrol would hold up fine? just recently did an oil change, but i don't mind spending a few more bucks to protect my engine for the track and use 5w-40

Oil psi and Oil temp gauges are very important if you are tracking your car a lot. I would read bobistheoilguy.com like rice mentioned so you can see if that rotella is right for you.

According to torco the sr5 is the only oil that the US government uses in their drone planes. The Feds have tested all the other oils , not my friend at one day at the track, and found that no other oil will hold at their demands. I race 3 weekends and one dyno session and sent the oil back to test with a sample of fresh original oil from the same badge and in comparisson it didn't lose any viscosity.
Of course it is recommended to change it not because the oil is not good but because all the contaminants in it. In theory I can run a full season with out changing it. Not that I will but I feel comfortable running at least 3 race weekends.
Also my friend bisi from Bisimoto is the only oil he uses. That to me is enough.
Just because some friend drove the car on track and didn't blow up means the oil is good. Go to the tech sheets and formulations or at least check to see what the professional teams are running.
I'm not saying it is the only oil but I have done my homework on it and at least is on top of my list.

Ok, I have a problem with this thread.... I have mentioned in other threads that you really need to research and experiment with this yourself and base it off oil psi, and oil temp to find the best oil for yourself and the best oil for the effective temp range.

I know Amsoil dominator race oil is right for me, I have tried several oils and it has worked the best for me. I never tried Rotella but have heard good things about it from a decent amount of people as well.

The government has been known to use whatever they can get their hands on for the best price too.....I wouldnt base my decision off that but everyone is entiltled to their own way of thinking.

The Torco stuff I hear a lot of forum support for but I dont see anyone running it that doesnt have some type of self interest in it...like selling it, BISI does sell it right? Wouldnt look to great if you werent using a product you push. I didnt see anyone running it at my last race either....maybe its a west coast thing or a 1/4 mile thing.

Ok, end of rant...

read bobistheoilguy.com for starters, please.

I have a question for you guys, where do and who do the oil companies get their oil from?

If you consider that a drone plane only cost us a gazillion dollars I don't think they will just dump anything from the shelf in it. Besides if you have a little knoledge of how this work , for the military money is not an issue.
Anyway , mfactory only recommends torco for their LSD , and yes bisi and me we sell torco , as well as other oils.
Again this is just my opinion based on educated information on hand, like I said it is on top of my list and doesn't mean it has to be on top of yours.
I just don't base it on my friend running this oil in his car on the track and him liking it.

Are you referring to me when you say my friend? As in my friend that sent samples away to be tested after a race at blackstone labs?

What are you basing your Torco use off of? That the military uses it in drones? That mfactory recommends it? There is no way they only recommend that product, I just ordered an mfactory lsd from gearspeed and when I asked about fluids they didnt say mfactory only recommends Torco. Come on now, dont make statements that are not 100% true.

Take a look at the F22 issues that have come to light...shows where the Military is at with things.

Boy you need a chill pill, if you read the whole thing there is people referring to their friends , if I want to say you did I would say it besides like I said that particular oil is in my list . And go to mfactory if I'm not mistaken they even sell torco . I'm giving my opinion out , if you want to use cooking oil in your car more power to you , the op posted what oil you prefer , that's why I hate answering this threats with no freaking directions so people like you , see now I refer to you, come out and start trying to get in a 3 page argument.

I use Valvoline conventional 5w30... nothing fancy.

I tend to do oil changes quite frequently though...

I think its safe to say we all have our own prefered brands and loyalties.
Some do their homework while some run what the majority use.

No one is more correct than the other unless your using vatozone brand or something like it (which you shouldnt be in a race car.)

No need to get all wound up over this... its like arguing over what color underwear one wears.
Silly!

Dirty I know, that you know, there is more to it than that but I guess nobody wants to run oil for the right reasons.

lwnslw I thought you were referencing what i said about my friend testing his oil from his mr2, sorry. Im not trying to attack you and Im not trying to start a 3 page argument but would I not be doing the right thing trying to educate or make suggestions from my own research and experiences?

I looked at mfactory, they Highly recommend torco, which is a product they sell so no surprise there.
