"Caterham protege Alexander Rossi gets his first F1 outing of the season this weekend, the American GP2 driver standing in for Kamui Kobayashi in first practice. The American last drove an F1 car at last year's US Grand Prix, since when the cars have new engines and less downforce and have become much more complicated. Unsurprisingly, Rossi admits to being 'a little bit apprehensive because I really don't have any idea what to expect'. Rossi has been in the team's simulator, but that can never perfectly replicate the experience of a real car.

"He said race drivers Kobayashi and Marcus Ericcson 'have been very helpful, and said these are the areas where it's very accurate and these are the areas where it's not so much'. Rossi admits Caterham's struggles this season mean he cannot afford to make any mistakes - 'solely because it hasn't gone well, the last thing the team needs is their reserve driver taking any risks; you kind of have to have a conservative hat on knowing the team is a bit on the back foot'. But he says: 'For every racing driver, the forefront of the mind is lap time so I'll obviously be comparing myself to Marcus. You want to show what you're capable of.'"

"The car is pretty damaged, the rear especially," Marussia's Jules Bianchi tells pit lane reporter Lee McKenzie. "I did a mistake, trying to be on the limit. It's fine. We'll be OK for second practice."

Fernando Alonso goes second, just one tenth off the pace of Lewis Hamilton in the Ferrari. Very impressive stuff from the Spaniard, whose Ferrari team have an engine upgrade this weekend.
