Default New hood vent installed and ready to test!

I've been meaning to do this for a season now just never could bring myself to cut my mint stock hood.

Picked up a custom hood duct from After Hour Automotive. From talking with a few guys who've run similar setups they've seen anywhere from 10-20 degrees reduction in coolant/oil temperatures.

I picked this up in the spring and have been waiting for a cheaper carbon fiber hood to pop up, finally grabbed one a few weeks ago and we got started with the process.

First thing install the carbon fiber hood

Then install our aerocatch hood pins

Jump ahead a few pictures, the hole in the hood is cut and we're now test fitting the scoop

We used MarineTex epoxy to bond the duct to the hood as recommended by After hours, this stuff is pretty crazy and has a shear strength of over 3500lbs!!! Pretty easy to work with as well:

We used a combination of White and Black epoxy mainly because it's impossible to find MarineTex up here. We literally bought out 2 stores to get the amount we needed (which was only 6oz). One we let the white stuff bond the structure we let that set for 2 days and then went through and prepped everything for the final "Black" epoxy application.

We used this to fill in the gap between the scoop and the hood on the top side of the hood. This epoxy is a near perfect match to the carbon fiber which made for a really nice clean look afterwards. It actually matched so well that we used it to fill in a few chips in the clear coat of our "cheap" carbon fiber hood.

Final Result:

We'll be building some ducting to go from our radiator and oil cooler venting out of the duct. Looking forward to testing these changes out on the track in the next few days.

if u have a carbon hood, u can make the duct. i know Mr. Baker from 32racing.net has made 2 of them with no added material. just cut the hood, rolled it down and put some stiffners in to hold the shape.

Did After Hours move to San Pedro, or are they still in Wilmington, CA.?

Just a quick update.

We got to the track last weekend, and got a chance to test out how effective the hood and ducting was. The ambient temperature was 27c-30c plus humidity. We managed to drop 15c from our oil temperature and 10-15c from our coolant temperature.

After a 30-40 minute lapping session our coolant temperature didn't creep over 205f-210f

This has been one of the best cooling improvements I have done yet, beside the addition of our setrab oil cooler.

Definitely recommend this setup to anyone.

Yeah it's definitely a lot of fun to drive, always a handful.

The bumper quick releases are just from racer parts wholesale. They are a dzus style latch:
http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/p...ners_And_Tools

It works really well, just these two latches at the plastic clips under the hood hold the bumper inplace. Takes a few seconds to take the whole front clip off the car including the P1 splitter's fiberglass lip.

Thanks for the figures regarding before and after temparatures. Seems I will do that as well soon, but I am wondering if nobody has ever made this to a standard non cf hood? Should be feasible?

From talking with Brian from Afterhours the MarineTex epoxy will bond to Steel, Fiberglass or Carbon so technically you can install this into a steel stock hood without any issues.

Originally that's what I was going to do, but I came across a good deal on a cheap used carbon hood and figured I'd save my nice pristine stock hood just in case I needed it someday.

Oil temperatures are usually 180-220f depending on ambient temperatures. I use Amsoil Dominator Race Oil 15w50. I've had really good success with this stuff. I ran this stuff in my stock B16 that was turbocharged with the same setup we have now. After 2 seasons of lapping/time attack when we pulled the motor apart the bearings, and everything looked perfect. This was even with oil temperatures getting up to 300f. I definitely swear by this stuff after that.

The epoxy we got from a local marine supply store. It's hard stuff to get up in Canada as apparently the Epoxy has lost some government rating and is technically not supposed to be sold in Canada anymore. All the places I talked to were still just buying it from the states.

Here's a link to their website so you can find a local dealer

Are those temps F or C? 300 degrees C is about 570 degrees F. That cant be right..

SportCar Motion is rocking one that looks similar to the Afterhours one. I haven't seen where/who made it though.

Soo..

Got ahold of After Hours Automotive -- their hood vent is $450. Yikes, a bit out of my price range.

SportCar Motion doesn't publicly offer their vent... yet [just checked their IG page, supposedly in the works)

AJ Hartman has this piece: Hood vent - AJ Hartman Racing

Have to take a look at the measurements and see if it would work. Wonder if he would be willing to work with some people and make an non-CF piece if it would save $$.

And then there is the Shelby GT500 hood vent, which is like $80.
