NASA Shenandoah/Summit June 11, 12 (Track reviews included)
NASA Mid-Atlantic wants to see you at the new and improved Shenandoah Circuit of Summit Point Raceway on June 11, 12! Late fee will begin Friday midnight on June 3. We will have our usual combination of Sprint races on both days plus all HPDE groups. We currently have 5 spaces left in HPDE 1 but no spaces in HPDE 2. Please e-mail registration@nasaracing.net to be put on wait list. Once we get a few more instructors to register, we can open up more spaces. HPDE 3 has about 10 spaces left. INSTRUCTORS......WE NEED YOU! Come out and try this great new track! See recent reviews of the track below.
Please note that we will be broadcasting announcements on a TBA FM station since PA System may not be audible in all areas of paddock. Please bring an FM radio with you.

COMMENTS FROM TEST DAY MAY 13
Our officials, Race Group Liaisons, Instructors, and selected racers were invited to test the new track on Friday May 13. Here is some of what they had to say:
Drivers were asked to rate the course on a scale from 1-10 with 10 being best and 5 being average. There were 30 who completed the survey.
How did you like the design? 8.46
How would you rate track safety? 6.37
How would you rate the current facilities? 8.35
(It is important to note that Summit will be making many changes that will improve track safety (listed below) and are opening up a new building with restrooms, showers and will have air and gas once we arrive. These were not available that day.)
Positive comments:
"As for design, in my opinion this is the best track in the country."
"I would race here and pass everywhere! Walls don't bother me....Watkins, Limerock, Road Atlanta...what is the difference?"
"Fun to drive - keeps you busy. More passing room than expected."
"An absolutely great driver's track!"
"Great technical track...has the makings of a great track."
"Track grows on you once you start "mastering" sections of it".
"Very fun track especially with the carousel...wonderful overall design."
"Much better than expected.....layout does flow well after track time."
"The hook is great fun as is Big Bend. I liked T1 as well."
"Fun for practicing car control"
"Great track..would gladly come back."
"A fundamentally fun track that challenges the driver."
The following were our driver suggestions for improvement, and many of these are being addressed prior to us being at the track on June 11, 12. Based on our suggestions and the suggestions of others who have run there, the track is smoothing out some bumpy, rough surfaces, adding tires to some walls, adding soft wall barriers, and filling in some drop-off areas at the transition of the track to the ground. These improvements and more will be made prior to our arrival.
Suggestions from our drivers for improvement:
"Bumpy, some rough curbs."
"Too many abrupt road surface transitions"
"Be careful in blind curve areas".
"Paving transitions needs attention."
"Approaching a spinner in corkscrew might be ?????"
"Small paddock. Need gravel at loop turn."
"Get some tires along walls especially head of back straight".
"Bumpy at first but once you learn line it isn't bad."
"More soft barrier walls needed. Smooth pavement."
"Put tires at wall straight ahead of braking zone for chicane in carousel."
"Lots of bumpy spots but I think you said those are being addressed."
Please e-mail registration@nasaracing.net with any registration questions. Please e-mail laura@nasaracing.net with any general NASA questions.
See you there!

Amusing that positive comments are simply labeled positive while the negative comments have a paragraph introduction and are labeled "suggestions for improvement".
I'm very curious to see this track handles wheel-to-wheel-to-wheel racing.
The more info everyone provides after their races the better.

Re: NASA Shenandoah/Summit June 11, 12 (Apocalypse)
The reason for the paragraph introduction of the suggestions for improvement is that the track management had already in their plans to address the majority of the concerns mentioned by our drivers. And, they also took into consideration any other suggestions by our drivers. I thought that was important to note. Summit Point is a very friendly and great track to work with and they are very responsive to our concerns.

That's how all the corporate annual performance reviews phrase it as well. We should just call them "Reasons you suck and reasons you don't."

Don't worry Steve, I plan to do the first practice session on street tires - so you can feel good about yourself. After that, well, it's ego crushing time.

Re: NASA Shenandoah/Summit June 11, 12 (Apocalypse)
I worked the course for the first ever wheel to wheel race that was run by EMRA. The one difference being they DID NOT run the Karossell. Anyway, there were NO PROBLEMS at all. The only problem all 3 days was a time trial driver who dropped 2 wheels in an area that had not yet been graded and rolled. That area has been fixed. This track is a blast and anyone who has driven it will agree. There were some growing pains as it is brand new but that is to be expected. Come on out and drive it. Do NOT listen to the internet crap put out there by anyone who has not BEEN there.

I was out there instructing for SVTOA and we were running the carousel. I really like the track. Once I got out on track, I didn't have any major safety concerns even from th passenger seat of Cobras (big engine, little brakes). I think they have the course designed to the point where I would feel as safe racing there as anywhere else. As has already been pointed out, the only real "suggestion" I have is the pavement transitions desperately need attention.

Re: (John)
I'll be there instructing and helping with whatever else. Can't wait to get back on Shenandoah, especially with Heidi's new setup (she is now basically a Spec E30 without a cage and with a few streetcar necessities remaining.)
This track is VERY fun, and it's gonna be a great weekend!
