You are looking for an SA2000 certified helment. Tell them you need one for Automotive not Motorcycle use. Difference is in the construction (multiple impact design vs. one hella big shot impact and nomex lining).

For autox, many people prefer an open face helmet for better vision/weight and other reasons.. I would NOT use and open face on a track though..

If you are only autocrossing then it can be a M (motorcycle) or SA (speical application) the M's are alot cheaper and can be purchased at any motorcycle shop the SA's you will have to order. plus alot more money. If going past solo II to solo I or track events you will need the SA..........

Re: Helmet for Auto X (jmhai)
Good point. I get caught up thinking open track. If you plan to do any open track events in the next few years, its is a worthwhile investment. If you are exclusively planning to do Solo2 then jmhai has a point on expense. On that note however, you can get away with a sub-$300 full face SA helmet (e.g. Bell M2/SportII) so it would seem worthwhile from my perspective.

Re: Helmet for Auto X (shane89z24)
I would advise against buying one mail order, at least for your first helmet. I bought my first helmet about a month ago, and I found that the correct size varied between manufacturers (Arai seemed to run small, for example).
Like everybody else said, if you are only autocrossing a motorcycle (M-rated) helmet is enough. I bought an SA rated helmet because I will probably go to a track day at some point. I bought a Bell M3-- it seems like a great helmet but it wasn't cheap. I did get a good deal on it because it's Snell 95, which will be good for five more years. A Snell 2000 helmet will be legal for 10 years.
