Time to post up the list again for 2011 because there is some new product and some updated pricing since the last list.

Newest member is Performance Friction RH665 DOT4 fluid with guaranteed minimum dry boiling point of 323C and wet BP of 195C, from Performance Friction Brakes (UK) Ltd.

and Brembo HTC 64T racing only fluid with a dry boiling point of 335C (635F)

Prospeed RS683 with a 683F has the highest dry boiling point and also the highest wet boiling point of 439F:

and how about this for high tech brake fluid PROJECT MU G/FOUR 335 :

...so you know when it's time to change it. and at about $22.50 per 0.5 litres, it is the best deal having the second highest dry boiling point. Not that much more than the el cheapo stuff I've been using for years, Motul RBF 600.

Lately I'm on AP Racing PRF 660, which seems very, very good.

Some fluids on the manufacturer's web site did not specify wet boiling point, so I used the relevant DOT 3 value.

Water absorption:
DOT 3: This brake fluid has a glycol base with additives. It is clear to amber in color. It is hygroscopic (meaning it absorbs moisture) and has a minimum dry boiling point of 401F (205C) minimum and a minimum wet boiling point of 284F (140C). It will absorb 1 to 2 percent of water per year depending on climate and operating conditions.

Castrol SRF remains as always the Wet boiling champ. I don't know of any other new ones.

Now of course boiling temp is not the only thing to consider, as compressibility, water absorption rate, recovery, viscosity index, etc all play a part. But without a brake dyno, that data is hard to get.

Thanks for putting this list together. It's nice to see all the data in one place.

Question: If the brake fluid is drained and replaced before each race weekend and the car isn't a street car, how important is wet boiling point?

It looks like Castrol has the highest wet boiling point, but with a significant price increase over Prospeed.

If you change it every weekend I wouldnt give two hoots about the wet boiling point.

Its somewhat important to me however, I only change mine once or twice per season (HPDE/TT/AutoX).

Ive been thinking about trying the Prospeed stuff, but I have not had any problems to date with RBF600 so I am having a hard time justifying the expense.

I run Prospeed in my car, get it from IMGT3 Performance (one of the few dealers of the fluid and they are local)

I used to run Motul RBF600 but was experiencing pedal compression and fluid boiling after a couple 45 minute sessions at Gingerman last year and had to back off so I made the jump over. I hate pucker moments on the track when it comes to braking

Wet boiling point is of no importance if you fully change the fluid often. Water absorption happens no matter what you do and that lowers the boiling point slowly from the dry to the wet value. If you just bleed a little out of the calipers to have fresh fluid there, then stuff in the rest of the system is slowly absorbing moisture. After a few months, boiling point has begun to reduce. But if you have no fade, then it is irrelevant.

It's often hard to know if your braking problems are related to too much heat at the rotor/pad interface, poor bedding, wrong pads, or poor performing fluid. But fluid is super easy to change, and so you can change it out to see if problem goes away, and then start looking for other solutions if things don't improve.

If you look at the chart I have posted before, you can see the drop in boiling point is very significant with water absorption. Bottom scale is shifted right a bit, but chart shows that for DOT4 fluid with a dry boiling point of 446F, moisture absorption of 1% lowers boiling point to 375F. Different brands have different additives to reduce moisture absorption, but who know which ones absorb at what rate.

The second chart shows that water content can be up to 2% in 1 year, depending of course on the conditions, and is more typically 1% per year. Moisture absorption happens through the cap, the lines, rubber seals, etc, so you can't stop it, since the fluid is hygroscopic and just wants to combine with water. The rate will depend on the moisture in the air and other factors, but it will be higher the drier the fluid is, since it is trying to reach equilibrium.

So I would think for a car that sees much track duty, change fluid twice a year, starting just before first track day of the season, and then half-way through. Don't change it after the season is over, as it will just absorb moisture over the off-season. Fresh season, fresh fluid.

I know this thread is old, but if someone is willing to update it, there are some more fluids to add

Probably the best update to do would be to say that the Prospeed RS683 fluid is now the same as Torque RT700.
