um that is not a entirely new concept.

And the AIM mychron XGlog does everything, minus GPS, that the racepak does and is significantly cheaper ($800).

I swear I thought the mychron gold xg log in my car used gps for track mapping? I don't know too much about the system, that seemed to be Tyson's baby, and I'm having trouble interfacing the Aim system and my new computer....64 bit and vista.....might need an updated driver?? BUMP

it uses the lateral acceleration and vehicle speed to make the track maps, not gps.

I haven't looked at all of the data collection systems yet, but I've seen some videos on Youtube that have overlays on the screen that show a tachometer plus digital speedometer. I think that one of the models that had it was a Traqmate but not sure what model like this video:

That video shows the speedometer (analog plus digital) but the tach and gear indicator were just not working. It seems like having the overlays would make it easier when reviewing the videos as you would know what rpm and speed you were running. For the overlays, is the speedometer from the wiring on the car, or is it calculated by the data collection system (GPS?). Just wondering what people feel about having the tach & speedeometer (and maybe gear) overlays on the videos, how much it adds to the cost, and how easy they are to hookup to a Honda Challenge type car. Thanks!! - Jim

I'd guess that they just stuck the trackmate in the car, to get the gear indicator and RPM to work you'd have to run some wires.

I haven't ever worked with that system, but from the description it looks like you have to overlay the video after the fact and that can get irritating.

this new(er) product will do everything you see in the video (you'd have to get more stuff to get the MPH and gear indicator to work), and it does it real time...

I could have that system hooked up in about 10 minutes on most cars. It takes about 2 mintues to stick the boxes in the car with velcro and 8 minutes more to setup the Tachometer. The rest of the data is from the logger itself.

Syncing the video takes no time as there is a sync cord connecting the Traqmate to a ChaseCam. With the software you buy, you just click on the session, link to the video and it runs for you with a few clicks. You can quickly setup a Theoretical best lap with it as well and the video will jump around showing one linked lap.

As for the SmartyCam. I'm looking forward to it showing up. It's limited in that you can't even get a tach signal without having either an AIM logger or a newer car that AIM has the ECU protocols for. It should be a nice setup though as it's about half the price of it's competitors. Right now cost is projecting at about 1200 for the SmartyCam.

We tested the SmartyCam at NASA Nationals. Jordan and Josh was there helping us out. They mention there will be tach signal connection soon as the SmartyCam is intended to be able to function as stand alone unit.

Nice.. I found out about Racechrono two weeks ago, so I decided to load the program onto my Treo 700wx (windows OS). I then sourced a bluetooth gps receiver from craigslist for $10. I then uploaded all the preconfigured track layouts for all the northern California tracks.. thunderhill, infineon, buttonwillow cw13, and laguna seca..

I tried out the program yesterday at Thunderhill, and to my surprise it worked very well. It shows which lines I took at each corner, as well as the speed. It has preset split sections, and displays your times for each section, as well as a calculated "fastest lap" that you should be able to run, based on the quickest times of each section.

The lap timer proved to be pretty accurate as well. My AiM timer was showing lap times of 2:17.77, whereas the GPS from the Racechrono was showing 2:17.90. Variations may also be due to the location of the start/finish on the Racechrono GPS, and the location of where I placed the AiM beacon.

Overall, pretty happy with the program, considering it is Freeware, and I only spent $10 for the GPS receiver. Also pretty neat how you can overlay the gauges and gps location on top of your videos. I am also lucky enough that someone in the Northern California region took the time to produce and upload the GPS configurations for all the Northern California tracks. Saves me a lot of time and headache trying to program it all.
