Autozone Axles...
I may be in need of a new driver's side axle, and would like to know if I should bother purchasing an Autozone Remanufactured axle. I just shot off an email to Raxles.com, but I have a feeling as though their price maybe significantly higher than Autozone...
Would these things hold up for Auto-X? (My current one is going out due to a curb-related incident )

Haha, I went with a better than auto parts store down here in florida and while I didn't have an axle fail, I've since had the boots replaced 3 times (on top of the first original purchase). Oh, did I forget to mention they new it was on a race car so they did not warrantee them. $$$ every time.
Go with Autozone!

I've never been happy with an advance auto/autozone reman. Karl said that NAPA sells axles with NEW cv's, about $100, no core charge.... might want to look into that.

I used to use Autozone stuff w/o a problem until I went racing. Had a catastrophic axle failure on Lowes Motor Speedway with an Autozone reman. Never again.

Re: Autozone Axles... (Warren)
Depending on the company doing the reman, you're probably better off spending some real money (or finding a used stock axle instead.)
"It's a wear item"... but while reman stuff may be fine for your aunt's Accord, it's usually not gonna hold up to any hard use.
One year I put five reman axles in the same SE-R. It seemed like every time I ran the car hard, I busted a CV boot (and one time snapped a CV joint in half...)
PS- if you can find a place that sells the ARI brand (usually any import specialty place that uses http://www.worldpac.com as a supplier) they are the highest quality stock rebuilds available.
Hope it helps-
Jon

PS- these ARI units are probably about like the $100 NAPA units mentioned above. Fully reconditioned and balanced with new joints, bearings, boots, etc... they run about $80-$120 + core depending upon where you find 'em. It's a much better choice than a $49.95 Autozone unit with somebody else's 200k-mile CV joints underneath shiny new boots.
Hope it helps-
Jon

Re: Autozone Axles... (B18CXr)
Last time I got axles at Raxles.com they told me that reman. units from places like Autozone etc. machine the bearing surfaces as opposed to Raxles that use fresh bearings. Those surfaces are hardened, so cutting into them will reduce their effective life. It's debatable whether or not they re-harden the bearing surface before reassembly.
The first (and last) time I used autoparts store reman. axles, I got 2 races in before they started "ticking".
You pays yer money and you takes yer chance.

Re: Autozone Axles... (limey)
My Advanced auto axles lasted about 2 years. Recently got a torn inner CV boot and the joint is about to go. Only 3 HPDEs but a lot of street miles. Fine for a street car.
I still have my axle receipts too, they better honor them.

Re: Autozone Axles... (D.CACO)
I had problems with the Advance Axles I got.
I went with Raxles and have been very happy. About $100 each with no core charge up front. They are very easy to deal with as well.

I wish Raxles would do a core charge. Then they would have 198749849238385493x the business!

Re: Autozone Axles... (LX4CYL)
since when did raxles not do core exchange?
you really do get what you paid for. if youre just tooling around the street and do the work yourself, then autozone or equivelent is the best choice. otherwise under high stress loads, raxles or oem rebuilds are the way to go. raxles service is unbeatable.

Re: Autozone Axles... (Tyson)
Let me rephrase...They did not charge me up front and refund the core charge as most do. They simply trusted I would send them my old axle and only charged me, up front, the price of the axle, with the understanding that if I did not send them my old axle, they would charge me the core charge. Clear as mud?
