No offense, but holy crap that's some of the most annoying chattering I've had to hear in a while ... I couldn't make it to the Willow Springs part ...

None taken, you cant please everybody. You really should see the Willow springs footage, though. Remember, support the tracks.

I think there would be more to the show than just watching people autocross. More like educational TV. Car set ups, techniques, tire tests, compairisons etc.
I'd watch it all day long...but when would I work.
You could even have guest apearances and that alone would seriously help the sport. Imagine if Mr. McCormick was to guest on a few shows and teach some basics. It would be great!

when i watch racing on TV, the one gripe i have is that there is not enough in-car.

from F1 to WRC to any televised racing, i want more in-car.

and yes, the key to this show being successful is the people. a/x in itself is such a short immediate full release, making it a very dense activity--but alot of the "story" is in paddock, garages, and in the human interaction. it may reek of reality tv, but i think that's where alot of the "good tv" is at.

I would recommend looking at the issues on H-T to get good ideas for the show. If we talk about it here, we are passionate and interested in it. A forum like this really captures all the human interest you would really need. Marry it with compelling visuals from the events we talk about, and you have a good show.

You could have made a great reality show based solely on the NASA HC spec tire debate alone . And as much as we hate all the nascar programming on speed, you can look at their example for the kind of stories they focus as a cue to how to cover motorsports and make it compelling. Just do that for grassroots Road Race\AutoX, and everyone here would tune in.

I agree. None of this fake drama crap that a lot of these show have to have. Have some interesting ongoing tech segments that show the testing and tuning that goes into a top contender. Maybe do a one-time segment on a first-timer showing everything from prepping his car to showing up at the track to his first runs. Also show an instructor driving the same car to show perspective speeds.

One thing that I've seen on Top Gear was a stationary camera showing speed differentials of two cars going through the same turn. They basically run the two videos on top of each other to show this. That would be really cool to see on TV since showing two runs back to back then explaining that the winner won by .025 seconds won't translate too well. But if you can show that the winner was 1/2 a bumper ahead in turn 3 and a whole bumper ahead by turn 5 you can really show the audience that minute differences at each corner make up a big difference in the end.

Also since autox runs are relatively short it won't take up too much time to show complete in-car footage of each of the top 5 runs for a certain class.

The potential problems I see is the fact that there will be 200+ cars out there in god-knows how many classes. If you're not sticking to a specific class it could get watered down and confusing to the viewers. So maybe pick a couple classes that are popular with the demographic you're making the show for and follow them. STS, SM, STX would be some good ones to follow IMO.

the execution is what will make or break a show like this.... please don't do it 'pinks' style...

Well consider how drag racing has been somehow made intersting enough for TV in 10-second bursts with instant replays and in-car footage of the runs.

side-by-side comparisons of two winning cars running the same course from the same camera angles would be fascinating to watch. Further analysis of what made the slower driver go slower through certain segments would be good analytical entertainment as well.

Pro-solo's could be a real treat to watch as well.

Also, as with any show, knowing your audience is the key... Autocrossers are not at all like the typical "import scene" folks who are involved in drifting, for example.

Definetly use good camera angles like top gear and try to give the viewers a sense of speed that is missing from most televised racing.

Top gear is a good one to look at for this.

Helmet cam would be cool.

Or how about a few from the cones perspective?
Just rambling I would love to see this show make it
