Perhaps a mechanic walking around the car might be carrying one of their secret uber-parts? Yamaha's factory team used to keep Doug Henry's YZM400 prototype 4-stroke motocrosser in the back of their pit area behind a black curtain when they were wrenching on it. All of their other 2-strokes were wrenched on in plain view. Besides, maybe the extra DAQ they're running on the motor during its first race makes it too ugly to been seen publicly! (Not entirely kidding... Toyota used to black-blanket their motors when the engine cowling came off the CART AAR Eagle-Toyotas when that motor was still under heavy development. What glimpses you did see of the motor revealed PILES of extra sensor wires which doesn't really convey Toyota-quality compared to the clean packages found elsewhere)

I don't see how their secrecy is any different than any other program in development.

So... how did the R10 do?

Toyota cheats in every kind of motorsport they enter - nascar, F1, cart, and they were banned from WRC.

Do you remember the original ALMS slogan... "For the fans." So yes, it is all about me, the TV(And live) viewer. They give us technophiles access to the paddock for a reason. I love to gaze on the new technology and watch pro teams wrench away on some of the most expensive and most impresive equipment in road racing. I take Audi's treatment of ALMS fans as a punch in the face and the fans are the biggest reason race series exist.

I didnt care for the R8, and I care even less for the R10.

Diesels belong in the tow rig... not in the racecar.

And for the first time in my life, Ill start rooting for Porcshe to kick some ***.

If they're cheating in F1, they're doing a sucky job at it.

Audi was being very secretive. They pulled the cars into their paddock front end first. All you could see was the rear end. I paused around there for a bit one night because they had the car up on jack stands running. They had the exhaust hooked up to a vaccum that vented it up to the top of their rig. That was the closest view anyone could get of any of the car's details.

The cars were very quiet. I kept comparing them to the sound of the Jetson's car. Very diffent from any other diesel.

Only one of two made it through the 12 hours. One retired from overheating about halfway through.

correction,

EVERY competitive pro race team works in the 'grey area' (cheats)...Toyota just cant seem to keep from getting caught.

They can do whatever they want and its awesome.

The FIA will likely strangle the audis and beat them into submission to make it a contest with the pescarolos and alike. And when Audi is forced to start running a fisher price "my first v12 TDI" motor to compensate for Pescarolos lack of development and engineering resources then youll see the tents open cus they will have nothing to hide.

I dont think we even saw the true speed of R10 just yet. They sandbagged it the whole race.

Audi - holding it down on the engineering tip yall

FIA went out on a limb to encourage green diesel technology, so Audi (and Pugeot, once they debut their oil-burner) are just following their lead. The reg's currently make the TDI option the most attractive for LeMans and Audi has a huge interest in the engineering and promotional value of participating, so FIA's and Audi's interests trump the fans'.

Kirk (who'd rather watch DP's duke it out in a real race, anyway)

This sounds like what people said when they saw the first airplanes, "If man were meant to fly he'd have wings."

I think we're going to see Diesel technology in a Lot of cars.

Isn't that a little naive??? Audi is doing something revolutionary IMHO. Granted they are not the first, but they are giving it a go with all the resources at their disposal. Auto racing should push the technological limits....you could say Audi is doing it with the R10.

You didn't put up the sponsor money for Audi's R and D. Neither did the TV network. They let you see the cars actually racing so you can stare at the pretty graphics on the sides. They tell you the results because you purchase street cars. When you get to see inside the paddock, do you do your duty as a technophile and call up the team the next day to discuss your ideas for improvement with the engineers?

Slogans sound cool, but if I really had it my way, there'd be little tiny strippers that popped out of my fry box at burger king and danced on the drink straw while I ate my burger.

After seeing that R10 this weekend I was highly impressed, not only 2 seconds faster than any other car there, that thing was quiet as hell. To bad they lost the other car to overheating. Seems like that is the big problem on those cars. The number 1 car started on the grid, while the number 2 car started from pit out due to a bad heat exchanger. A few hours into the race, the number 1 car over heated leaving the number 2 car to finish the race. All in all, good times there this past weekend.

Audi claimed the second car was yanked as a precautioanry measure. The telemetry showed high water temps due to tire pieces building up in the radiator ducts. It was to save the engine. So i dont know if its necessarily a mechanical flaw or if they made this **** up.

I know they were very hush hush about everything and even taped over the in car camera while the car was pulled behind the wall. Later in the day is when I heard about the overheating issue. Either way, those things are fast as hell.

He was like 4 laps ahead at the time it happened. I did see damaged fins/vents that were damaged above the drivers side front wheel. Dunno if that had anything to do with it.

Well... The car that lasted had to install a new fuel pump about 7 hours into the race.

Right after the race, I was sitting on start finish and decided to walk down to the Audi hot pits. Low and behold there was a third fuel pump sitting there waiting to go in.

There were reports of a funny smell coming from the retired Audi which tells me it was more then just an overheating problem.. Odds are during their "telemetry blackout" they had the fuel pump go south losing fuel to the motor, running EGTs through the roof and burning up a piston.

I maybe totally wrong about this diesels, but if any other lose a fuel pump, they just quit running.

If your in a car putting out 650 HP, and you lose a pump while your heavy on the throtle, bye bye motor.

If you run a diesel "lean" it just loses torque; EGTs go DOWN and piston damage is REDUCED. Totally opposite to a gasser.

Honda318dx is right: without adequate fuel a diesel just quits running.
