Default Another Early Friday OT

Since many of us will be travelling to the holy land tomorrow, here it is...

What was the first album YOU ever bought?
I'm not talking about purple dinosaur stuff your mommy got you when you were 3, I'm talking about the first thing you selected, paid for, and took home.
And be honest. If it was Madonna or New Kids, admit it. We'll still love you and that's what will make this entertaining.
Also, Album? Cassette? 8 Track? CD?

Me...
Van Halen, Women and Children First, Album.
I was about 11 or 12, and it was actually the first thing EVER I can remember buying with my own money. I'm pretty sure it was birthday money from my Grandma.

Have you seen junior's grades?

Mine was an en masse purchase as a result of joining Columbia House way back in the day. All in vinyl, and I won't remember most of the album names, so instead I'll rattle off a song title or something...

- Alan Parsons Project, the one with Eye in the Sky
- Asia
- Men At Work
- Toto IV
- John Cougar, the one with Jack and Diane

There were some others I'm forgetting.

First 45:
Jean-Jacques Goldman: "Il suffira d'un signe" Ya'll wouldn't know it anyway - but there it is.

First LP:
Queen: the soundtrack to Flash gordon. "Flash! ooh aaahaaah - Master of the Universe!" Good times...

First Cassette:
heh, a blank one so I could compile a bunch of songs from my records... and then another one to record my ZX-81 basic programs I had typed in (I'm sure you have no clue what I'm talking about, but that's ok - humour me, I'm getting old.)

First CD:
I bought two the same day actually: Metallica "...And Justice for all"; The Cure "Standing by the Sea" (a best-of compilation)
Bought those to play on my 18th birthday present: a Cd-player boom box. It is still working 17 years later, and hanging under a shelf in the garage, providing tunes - as RJ can attest to.

The first CD I remember buying was Led Zepplin Houses of the Holy.

I am searching the memory banks, and I can't remember my first music purchase, although it may have been that 45 of Thriller I used my allowance money on in the grocery store back when it first came out.

The first "rock" tape I ever had was given to me for Christmas by Kurt Spitzner when I was about 8... Def Leppard Hysteria. I wore that sumbitch OUT!

When I bought my very first tape it was the first album that had a parental warning on it for language.

The Tape: Def Leppard - Hysteria

Duran Duran - "Notorious" on cassette tape.

First CD was the "Top Gun" soundtrack. I redeemed myself with my second CD purchase - Rush "Exit...Stage Left"

My first CD... The Cult, Love.
I think that was like '89/'90.

Spitzner?
That guy just pops up everywhere.
So you probably know the Doughtie clan? I went to college with Scott D., we got arrested together once in Gulf Shores. Got plastered and decided to steal a palm tree. Uhhh... That didn't work out so well.

The first two were bought at the same time...A CD of Van Halen "1984" and a record album of Van Halen "Fair Warning"...which is still one of my favorite Van Halen albums of all time.

The first thing I bought was either the Miami Vice soundtrack or the Beverly Hill Cop soundtrack, both on vinyl.

The first CD I bought was the soundtrack to BTTF II after my parents had bought me a brandy new stereo (100W/channel, baby... man, my parents regretted that) and the BTTF III soundtrack.

I don't remember the first cassette... but Def Leopard-Pyromania was one of the first.

Interesting note: The oldest audio thing I own is a reel-to-reel tape recorder from before 1969. Still works. The reason I know it's that old is that I have an original recording of 12 hours of the moon landing recorded from the radio.

Thanks Catch for reminding me of a bad day.

Don't know about the Doughtie clan. You should tell some tales.

Spitzner worked for my dad for about 8-10 years out of college at the hardware store. When dad first hired him, he was drag racing AMC products (some things never change). Kurt got dragged out to an autocross, got hooked, got dragged to some THSCC meetings, got railroaded into being president, and the rest, as they say, is history.

I think mine was REM's "Life's Rich Pageant" on cassette. First album ... hmm, may have been The Replacements' "Please to Meet Me." Too young to have an extensive vinyl collection. First CD might have been Midnight Oil's "Diesel and Dust." I was sooooo alternative.

First Tapes: Naughty by Nature, self-titled and Beastie Boys, License to Ill

First CDs: Eazy-E, EZ Duz It and NWA, *****s 4 Life

This was 1990 and I was 12. I was a wimpy, middle-class white kid who was totally hooked on gangsta rap. I still remember like yesterday my dad freaking out when he heard the lyrics and going ballistic on my mom for letting me get them. He never did take them away though.

I can't remember the very first CD I ever bought, but I do remember picking up Ace of Base as way way back in the day. That like all of my other CD's were stolen!
