Lol I saw this exact car on the freeway the other night right after I saw the post. If it wasn't this one, it sure was a close copy.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by shearinfinity &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Well I've been browsing the honda-tech forums for a bit, lately through many of the paint threads. So earlier this week I decided to try it out with a new hatch I had recently bought. I took a few pics through out the process.

Paint: Spray Can Rustoleum Satin Black
-Maybe 16-20 Cans? I forgot, could have been less. About 4-5 coats I believe.

Primer: Rustoleum Black Automotive Primer
- Probably about 10 cans. Prob about 3 coats, a bit thicker, and sanded down depending on area.

Here's the crap that I started with:

These last couple pics, someone changed my camera settings so they came out blurry.

These pictures here were taken before the blurry pictures, I was checking the water bead. These pictures are much more accurate in showing the color of the car.

I'll take better pictures as soon as I get a chance to install my side markers and fog lights, as you can tell, it rained for the last two days hence why I stood around taking crappy pictures instead of working on the car.

If I took my time I could have gotten the body more straight, but since this is a budget car, I gave it a budget paint job. Plus I didn't have room in my garage to spray the car, so I didn't use my compressor or my guns with better paint (home association bleh). So it was sprayed right were you see the car in the pictures.

The total amount of money I've spent on this car is about $1,600. Thats including the car itself, and everything on it, rims, lights, paint & materials with a new radiator. Not to bad.

Oh, for those who may want to know, the total process took about 3 days, maybe 4. Starting at Noon and ending at 5pm. It was a bit of a rush job, but you get the idea.
</TD></TR></TABLE>

how much did u pay for this project...

Here are a few pics from about an hour ago. Just about done with the exterior, and Interior just needs a few things for the interior (dash, horn etc.), finish the stereo/speakers, a good wash and vacuum and I'll be done with the car for now.

Total cost for the project is about $2,650 now. That includes everything from the car to replacement screws for the dash. If you were talking about the Paint job price, it's around 100 bucks, including paint materials + sand paper + tools, etc. I'd have to say most of the cost since my last pic post was the interior. Seats + custom brackets to mount 1"+ lower than original brackets, full black interior, jdm console, etc..

heres the daytime pics that someone asked for months ago, sorry it took so long....
it was rustoleum appliance epoxy enamel gloss black, took about 6-7 cans to do and if you're only painting a civic hatch you might even be able to get away with 5. $25 paintjob FTW. Even tho it said gloss black after it dries its more of a satin, there is some reflection in it yet it looks flat at the same time....
If the flat or satin black look is what youre goin for I would definitely recommend the rusto appliance epoxy.... It goes on smooth and covers nice, and if youre careful it wont look blotchy like most spray can jobs....
I still prefer real glossy auto paint tho....

Im just curious, does anyone know what this car has over the outside of the glass to make it look dull? If you look closely you can see in the front windows that he only has it covering half the window. Is this some kinda film? and if so where do you buy it? or is it sprayed on? like a tint? Thanks

Can some one tell me what they suggest for the "satin black" paint on their cars? The only paint that the local shop has is PPG...which is about $300 for paint without the clear, reducer etc.

I only want to paint a hard top for my car....ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR A GUY ON A BUDGET? BUT NOT IN CAN? I want more of a shine...like the satin but the local paint store says he can gather some items up..for $300 for paint and flat clear. BUT im scaried it will be too flat... Is $300 normal for a satin black paint?

Hot rod flatz man,

http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/ksflatz.aspx

Single Stage Automotive paint. Kits come with required reducer and hardener for about $100 bucks for a gallon. Good stuff and its not in a spray can. Same price for primer + hardener + reducer. It would be like $200 something for a gallon of each. It's just one option. If you want clear, they have the kits for that to, flat agent or not, its your choice.

They have um at home depot for 99 cents, gloss black or flat black, go to the spraypaint isle and look all the way at the bottom shelf.... But that stuff is designed to be cheap not to adhere well to the surface..... I would go for the rustoleum appliance epoxy gloss black, 5 bucks a can but you'll be happy with it...

I did a 88 prelude with about 6 cans. I bought 8 cans and used like 3/4 of all of them. You could get away with 6 cans if you use every last drop out of every can, but I was having a problem with the paint spitting near the end of the can.... Dont worry it wont fade. Give your entire car a wetsand with 400 or 600, (the epoxy paint likes a smoother surface) and paint over it....
And PLEASE post pics....
The reason my prelude shown above looked semi-dull, is because the only prep I did was sand the whole car by machine with 120 grit, then sprayed right over it.... the 120 grit surface made it look semi-dull, then I sprayed the spoiler which was just lightly sanded with 400 and it was the only thing that came out shiny....
Live and learn next time I wont be lazy Ill sand the whole car with 400 or even 600 so the paint whole car will look as shiny as the spoiler....

I also painted a dresser with the extra paint I had, didnt prep it at all, it came out shiny as expletive and still shines months later, I can see a detailed reflection in it....

Trust me Rustoleum appliance epoxy enamel gloss black painted over a 400 or 600 grit sanded surface will look beautiful.....

No it wont fade give it a couple coats of wax in a week and yes you could get away with 6 cans if you're really on a 30 dollar budget....
Just paint all horizontal parts first (hood, roof, trunk lid) because your going to have to hold the cans pointing downward for those parts and only full cans will spray downward without spitting....
The rest should be fine....

and POST PICS!!!!

I wish I had some better pics of the spoiler but maybe you can see here how the spoiler was shiny like a real paintjob because it was sanded wit 400 and the rest of the car that was sanded with 120 looked semi-glossy or satin like.....

edit also the car was filthy in this pic.... wish I took more pics of it before I sold it./...

and if anyone was wondering what that chrome spraypaint looks like, thats whats on the rims.... doesnt look like chrome but does look like some kind of shiny metal....
