Default My $50 Paint Job build thread

As of right now I am almost finished with the bodywork, not posting any of that since I'm not doing a bodywork DIY thread..

Materials:
Rustoleum Safety Red Professional
Mineral Spirits
Same as above in Rattle can for hard-to-roll spaces
Sandpaper (assorted wet & dry)
One large, one small foam roller

Will be mixing 50/50 with mineral spirits, and I have wetsandpaper in 400,800, and 1000. Pretty sure cut&buff is not for the Satin finishes.. so I'm just planning on wetsanding.

Prep: DA'd the car with 220 grit sticky pads, hand blocked with a 320 grit. Wiped entire car down with mineral spirits, and applied my first 2 coats.

Following Pics after first 2 rolled on coats, prior to wetsand w/ 400 Grit:

Planning on stepping up wetsanding to 800, 1000+ after final stages.

After 400G wetsand...

Following was another 2 coats
after a 400G wetsand... Next will be an 800G wetsand.

Gloss starting to appear, coverage is almost complete...

Hey I'm going to save you a lot of troubles and heart ache I don't comment often. but when i do it must be some epic thing to say anyways I don't think you can roll On a satin. I did my car satin black but sprayed it on. The thing about satin is once your done your done, You cannot sand it or buff it or else it will look like some primer for you it will be green with no shine. I recommend you do a test panel roll it on, sand off the lines and i guess try to buff it, and take some pictures

True. Been there, did this, went gloss in the end. The only way satin is going to look good is when its sprayed because if you sand it and buff it out, it pretty much comes out like a dull gloss black, with a reflection like a full gloss black.

There is a way, though, to do the Rustoleum with a Satin and have it come out looking a lot more decent than rolling it on. A lot of people latley have been taking the Rustoleum, mixing thier Mineral Spirits, then spraying thier car with the paint using house paint sprayers (from the brands like Wagner, think like the Wagner Power Sprayer.) Other than that, youll be heartbroken if you roll it on.

One more thing, actually, that you could do, is roll on the satin pain to get a few good solid undercoat layers going, then sand it down smooth and hit it once or twice with a sprayer.

I saw the Royal Blue, but they didn't have a matching rattle can. I picked up Safety Red gloss instead. Prep tomorrow, roll on Friday.

Just put on the first 2 coats, haven't sanded yet but will post pics of the progress.

Everything is going fine except for the fact that the wind started to pick up, so I'm sure i'll be doing some EXTRA wetsanding to get crap out of the paint. :/

Obviously you havent seen a car done in Rustoleum the proper way. They can look just as good as any other car with a $300-$1200-$3000 paint job when done right. Ive seen plenty of $1000 + paint jobs that look like garbage.

Reading some of the idiotic posts by close minded fools like you makes me wanna cry for still being a part of the Honda scene. Idiots like you are driving the real enthusiasts out of the game...

+ 1 for the rusto-attempt Pizza Man! Cant wait for pics and progress!

there is no "proper way" to paint a car in rustoleum, or paint for vinyl decks, or wood stain, or garage floor coating, or whatever the hell you wanna paint your car with.

Yeah he's totally being stupid. Don't worry about the lack of clearcoat, that **** that protects your paint. Don't worry about how the paint will instantly dissolve when brake fluid hits it. Don't worry about the fact that the paint dries but never cures, the solvent just evaporates out.

or the fact that it all has to be sanded off if you ever try to paint over it with automotive paint otherwise you will cause it to bubble and lift
