Best Way to Fix a Faded Roof
I'm very new to doing paint and body work, just finished up reading the whole sticky thread.
If I didn't want to prep and repaint the whole car how could I fix just the roof? It's starting to have those sun fading spots.
<<See Pics>>
Someone told me that I could just wet sand it down to the base, hit it with a clear coat and it would be good. I'm not trying to have it look minty, just trying to see what inexpensive options I have.

They said, "wet sand with 2500 grit, then compound and polish with a buffer."
Not sure what the "then compound and polish with a buffer" means. =\

^ yep. Delamination. The clear is breaking down and separating from the basecoat. Your only solution is to repaint it. Don't let anyone tell you any different.. any time spent trying to remedy that is time wasted.

I had the same exact look on my 98 3000gt a few months ago. If you see ANY peeling, the only remedy is a new paint job. I had my roof painted for $200 at a local body shop.

That's ghetto.
That's a reasonable price. Doing things the right way doesn't always break the bank. For an even cheaper, but still acceptable repair the OP could just take it to Maaco and have them do it instead of a regular shop. Maaco charges like $300 for an entire car so a roof should be like $20 lol.

Putting vinyl over peeling paint is like putting duct tape around a broken radiator hose. It's going to function but it's not the right way to repair it. It's not fixing anything, it's just covering it up. Aside from looking like garbage you're just procrastinating. You're going to have problems down the road with both vinyl over failing paint and duct tape on a rad hose. It's the same thing. It's simply not right.
What's the fascination with half assed crap around here? Surely no one would suggest a duct tape repair or some sort of rigging somewhere else on a car, so why on paint? It's no different. Just get the damn thing re-painted.

Re: Best Way to Fix a Faded Roof
My Honda Accord has a fading problem. The rear end and one of the rear doors had been repainted, but it was a s***ty job because all the clearcoat is now cracked and faded on the 'repaired' locations. I was able to wet sand slightly with 2000 grit, then hit it with the buffer and it came out looking shiny enough to look like new paint. I did not get deep into the clear, so there are a few spots where you can tell its not smooth unless you look close. Only cost me about $50 for sandpaper, compound and a new buffer wheel.
Ill see if I can get some before and after pics on here.

The clear coat it toast.
The right way to fix it would be to sand all the clear coat off the roof with 320 or 400 grit and then spray some primer sealer on it,then base and clear.
