Default The RAVEN: A journey for an 8s DD Automatic AWD Beast (4G63)

Hey guys, I'm back with my new and hopefully final build. I figured if I am going to go for it, I might as well go all out.

For the past few months I have been racing (track) and showing my prev. boosted Time Attack RX8:

Naturally the DSM kept screaming for attention.. With the sell of the white Falco shell:

And money from selling the parts from my Dirty Birdie builds B and C:

B:

C:

I had enough money sitting in my car fund to get back in the game. A friend had some plans to move on to a small block FC project (everyone wants one of those...) and there was no way I was going to let those goals die

Just like some of the greats of our past, John Shep's car, Jake Montgomery's car, etc. It was a sight lost and picked up and moved to the next level. I will be doing the same. My choice for the name Raven stems from the EAP poem under the same name. Considered by many to be the original "shocker" the breeding light behind all that we know today as situational, and suspenseful horror.

If you are lined up with the car, it will peer into your soul just as the Raven mentioned in EAPs poem. That and in a non f*g way, that poem was BA.

I present to you:

THE RAVEN!

Lets get to the good stuff...

Bolt-ons:

Magnus RACE intake manifold
Greddy Kevlar T-Belt
AEM adj. cam gears
1600cc FIC injectors
75mm Wilson TB
Buschur COP
NOS PRO Fogger kit
B&W S400 75mm Turbo (s475)
200+amp Saturn Alt + Jays Saturn relocation kit
AEM CDI TWIN FIRE 4chan
Dual Bosch 044 fuel setup

Engine:

Ross pistons
Groden aluminum rods
Buschur lightened and knife edge crank
Steel O-ring
Moroso oil pan
Kiggly girdle

Head:

Built/tested/ported by Speed Injected; +1mm over and sleeved
Ferrea SS valves
Crower Springs (Most likely Kiggly beehives when cams are changed)
FP 3x Cams (Will be changed to either fp5r/fp11s *camzilla setup* or Kelford 288/280s)

Engine management:

AEM EMS *Tuned by Sean Burgess of FFTec*
AEM 5bar MAP
AEM AIT
AEM UMEGO W/B

All other gauges are matching Auto Meter (Soon to be changed to all digital AEM gauges starting with the AEM Trans temp gauge)

Drive train:

Only current FULL manual bodied Auto transmission 3spd with Transbrake (ATP)
DSS Axels (Don't need em, but I got em so why not...)
Stock T-Case (Autos don't need the up grade)
Stock drive shaft (Read above)

Handling:

Big brake upgrade
R1 drilled/slotted rotors
3kGT Calipers
Hoosier QTPs
AGX/GC (Sold the Teins)

The aluminum rod motor in its glory thats going to make its way over to the Raven build minus the GTK1000 and instead a bigger s475 BW turbo. Also I am opting out to go with some Kelford 276/288 or 280/288 cams or even FP4rs or FP5r/FP11s opposed to the FP3xs to give the car a more powerful curve and allow the car to breathe uptop where it matters most. I recently disassembled it again as it will be going back to the shop to have the Kiggly girdle installed with and the mains line honed. I'll also be switching to a steel O-ring and felpro composite gasket with L19s.

Big ups once again first and foremost to the guys at ASAP. Also the guys at RCB who built the cage.

Its definitely a sleeper, and that is the whole idea behind it. The full 12pt chromoly cage is so well built/hiden that you can't see it from nearly any angle, and I am referring to walking up to it and actually looking for it. If you are in another car passing by or lining you'll never see it.

A wolf in sheeps clothing?

Many asked about the cage. I didn't have anything other than my cell phone to take my pics so they didn't come out as well as I wanted but I'll be getting better ones later on. These will do for now.

Previously the only real known interior pic of this car:

Well here's a few more:

The most comfortable seats I have ever owned

Cleanest install I have yet seen

Sweet and simple

B&M ratching shifter anyone?

Brand spankin' new Auto Power prof. camera pod

All accessories have their own fuses/power sources apart from the engine harness as well as relays for major items hidden behind the dash. As it should be.

Both door bars are het shaped to the curvature of the door, extinguisher on pass. console panel.

Gutted and all holes capped

Battery box located right behind passenger seat to help balance the car load. Also pictured are some exhaust pieces

Ok, more pics FTW..

I was known for the semi/tucked engine bay movement I started amongst the DSM community for our DDs,

So coming from that to this sight kind of had my stomach churning:

ALL of my hoses are AN lines so that will add bling but unfortunately are much harder to hide.. Certain SS hoses will be replaced with my proclassic lines to better hide them, other than that I'll make it work.

First things first, drop the main harness, shave all the holes, primer it, re spray, relocate fuse box and remove AC fuse box. It'll be a big project but nothing I haven't done before..

Tranny line pressure

Custom Rad setup. Rad and intercooler can be removed in about 2-5 minutes and the fan doesn't even have to be taken off..

Breather with single -12an line. Most run dual 10s. I will be stinking with the single until further notice, if push comes to shove I'll move onto dual -12ans.

A few people PM'd me about the Magnus RACE manifold. Most aren't familiar with it and don't even know it existed lol. I believe I am the only one running it but some unknown might have it as well.

Size wise, its about TWICE the size of the regular Magnus, and just by eyeballing it is also bigger than the AMS, DV/DT, FFTec and JMF Drag... Bellow is a comparison between the Regular Mag and the Race.

he race dwarfs the street version in a way that it almost made me laugh that I ever ran it. I had similar pictures next to my friends JMF and its equally as funny.

Another size ref.

Next season should be fun..

Pure sex

Here's a couple with it mounted on the motor just to give you another point of reference (pictured with my old GTK1000 setup)...

Yes you are seeing it right, its about the same size as the Head itself...

That hard piping setup you saw went to my GTK 1000 setup:

Basically all the water in/outlets were modified to accept couplers by welding on a piece of beaded round.

A few pics of the tow rig with some friends helping set it up, the car will be a street car, but if ever it has to be towed for what ever reason, I got it covered.

With no license plate and thus no tags I didn't want the car chillin' on the street so I called up some friends and we got it put on the trailer:

Tucked away in its storage all nice and cozy. I'm borrowing my GFs camera so hopefully I can get some better pics today...

More picz!

Interior:

Camera pod mounted-

Cockpit (Momo race wheel will be installed as soon as my quick disconnect comes in stock as well as the proper hub)-

You know you're the real deal when you need a 60psi boost gauge-

Cage:

Gorgeously crafted... I have seen plenty of cages on the boards and in person and few are built to this caliber. I'm fortunate by far. Much kudos to the RCB guys in S. Florida who fabricated this cage.

It hugs the head liner -

Look how it hugs the plastic moulding on the inner door.. Ridiculous-

Nearly invisible from out side the car (as it should be)

Built to insure the most comfort and leg room as possible-

RCB guys showing how a cage should be ran, through the dash (looks factory)-

WTF is this thing?!:

Looks good but hmmm...-

Yeah... Thats right, thats the chute lever... These guys are on top of their game.

140mph.. better get ready...-

155mph.. Hooooold on...-

Racing seats/Harnesses:

Passenger side utilizes the same bucket profile ABS light weight seat (about the lightest seats you can buy) as the driver as well as an RCI 5 point racing harness. The difference is the Passenger seat is a hook lock/latch type and the Driver is a quick disconnect cam lock.

Passenger-

My large frame (6'3" 270) fitting nicely in them (not tightened down.. but you get the idea)-

Driver side RCI Cam lock -

Driver installed -

And last but not least, so fresh n so clean.. Matching tree freshiner-

Yeah, me and Sean have been planning something big for a few years now. When you were there I am sure you saw the Drag DSM shell that was there.. that was one of the builds that never happened mainly because I wanted a full street car. That shell is gutted to all ends and has a 1gal tank hahah, no bueno.

Ok, so back to business..

The heart and soul of this build is the motor/transmission.

Built by myself and machining done by Dels, the motor rocks the following parts:

Ross pistons (machined for race pins)
Alum. Groden Rods
Buschur lightened and knife edge "butterfly" crank
Moroso Race oilpan
Kiggly girdle
ARP hardware
O-Ringed
ACL race bearings (modfied for oil valleys)

And me being the awesome person I am, I went to the storage and pulled the head off just to get some better pics-

O-Ringed-

One of my favorite things about the motor (believe it or not) is the Moroso pan. This thing brings me back to my V8 push rod roots and just the look of this thing lets people know you mean business -

Gorgeous. And yes its bolted on using studs instead of typical bolts.

I guess, someone has to keep the masses entertained with a "big boy" build. This has to be the slowest page to load on all of H-T, too many pics lol.. Well here's more!

More misc. parts:

Jays Racing Saturn Alt. relocation kit and brand new Saturn alternator *The significance of the Saturn alternator is it runs at 125amps compared to our smaller 85-90 amp unit. On top of that the replacements for them are about 1/3-1/2 the price! The Jays racing relocation kit relocates the alternator to behind the block where the A/C compressor once once. This however is a rear JR relocation kit in the fact it is made specifically for the Saturn alt, before this, the only option was to DIY which I have done on other friends cars. This just looks sexier I guess haha*-

Greddy Kevlar T-Belt-

AEM Cam gears-

Simpson chute and custom removable mount-

And of course if the Engine is the heart, the Transmission must be the soul. *Built by ATP* This is still the ONLY COMPLETELY manual bodied automatic in the entire 4G63 world. Not only does this mean the car shifts something more comparable to a clutchless manual, but also gives the option to have a trans brake.. Yes, a trans brake on an AWD Mitsu tranny.. bananas!*-

Eeeeew, dirty. But that's what happens when your idiot friend leaves the TC laying on top of the tranny as if their is no fluid in it..

I've got it cleaned up and re-preped. It'll be as good as new before its installed.

First off, great build

Secondly, as a friend of Jake's knowing he is talked about in the same breathe as Shep is a dream come true. Jake spent YEARS working on his DSMs ...broke stuff...never quit...truly dedicated to his DSM racing no matter what...much respect for him. True hands on guy from the ground up.

Best of luck to you, I was a little sad when Jake sold his car but it looks like the black mamba DSMs are in full force.

A street launch in that thing in winter time with 650whp was scary fun...cant imagine that thing with 800+ lol the car drifts lanes when you roast all 4...interesting feeling

Best of luck man

Thanks bro! Its definitely a work in the making. I'm not a new figure in the DSM world and have seen Jake come from meek 11s to 8s. I wouldn't say he is in the same category as Shep, or even close for that matter, but he was definitely an inspiration to me and meeting him and see how he openly assisted others with information was beyond commendable.

My original build was purposed to take him on but since then there are much faster cars running around so the bar is much higher. I can only hope to compete but at the same time excel.

Meant to do a little parts update a while back but forgot, but I'll go ahead and post it up. Hopefully later today I'll have some updates on the engine bay wire tuck and try to figure out whether I want to simply relocate the fuse box (most likely) or go through the hassle of cutting it up just to save a few lbs..
Some had questions or wanted to see closer pics of the radiator/IC setup so I russled some pics up.

A few early pics:

Radiator removed:

Close up on customized end tanks -
