99 Nissan Maxima Trouble
Hey guys I have a 99 Nissan Maxima with the 3.0 DOHC engine. Recently me check engine light came on and threw 3 codes. One being the evap system, next the fuel system, and the knock sensor. Well I replaced the knock sensor and now the other 2 codes are still present. I would like to know if these problems could be related? It sais so many things that could be wrong. When I shut the car off I hear almost like a humming then I open the fuel cap and it goes away. Very strange. Orielly gave me a big list of problems that could be wrong with it. One thing it said was the gas cap. Could it be just the gas cap? Has anyone had a problem such as this? I am used to working on my Integra but I sold that so this Maxima is new to me.

Well we can start random splurges but we need some stuff. Code numbers, since your saying fuel system this would make it an diag issue which would cause your car to do something out of whack. For the most part what's connecting these two is the fuel pressure regulator. I don't wanna keep throwing out things. List will be endless
Can it be the gas cap, sure but it will most likely cause hesitation on start due to vacuum not holding.

Well I replaced the fuel cap and I still smell fuel. I don't see any puddle under the car when I park it. Let me find the codes tonight when I have them read at Orielly's.

Re: 99 Nissan Maxima Trouble
Alright so I used the code reader and came up with 2 different codes this time trouble code1448(EVAPORATIVE EMISSION EVAP CANISTER VENT CONTROL VALVE OPEN) Also code P0440(EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYTEM MALFUNCTION) so I am assuuming I need a new evap canister vent control valve the way it sounds. Sounds like a common problem from the research I have done. Any input?

Yes test the one you currently have. Find it off the component locator, two common spots for it will be a hose leading off the intake manifold near the top of the engine. If you cant find it follow the handy green evap service ports. Other spot will be near the charcoal canister.
The vent control valve should have a two wire connector get either a volt meter or a power and ground N control it. This valve should be closed at idle when cold and warm sometimes depends on ECT. Cruising this valve should open and let vapors to the intake.

Re: 99 Nissan Maxima Trouble
Crazy ...i sold my teg and bought a 97 Max.....since ive had the car (6 mo) i've noticed a strange humming sound under the hood near the firewall on the passenger side but i just suspected it may be an issue with the serpentine pulleys, possibly the alternator or bearing in the shaft of the alternator (presuming their is)
I had the car checked for codes and it had threw a knock sensor, EVAP, and secondary O2 so i have a few things i need to replace when i can find time to get under the hood beyond routine maintenance.
I'll try removing the gas cap tomorrow and seeing if this has the same effect on the sound as you seen

Re: 99 Nissan Maxima Trouble
didn't bother reading the thread....well here we go problem with the maximas'
evap vent valve goes bad very very very common probably a p0455, vent valve and a cansiter both a set please to fix correctly on that old car with some years on it they crack a lot
for "fuel system" theres a TON of o2 sensor issues with the maxima's theres a few reprograms and there are issues' with the mass airflow sensor as well
as for the knock sensor....they do NOT act like knock sensors on honda's actually if the only code you have on the nissan is a knock sensor it WILL NOT! turn on the MIL it will store a code but the MIL will not come on ever
get me code numbers i'll tell you how to fix it or where to start at least
