Default 91 Camry wont start

Hopefully someone can help me out a little here. I've got a 91 Toyota Camry 2.0 auto that I'm building into a demolition derby car. When I got the car it ran fine, just a little rich.

I changed the battery out and since then I've had nothing but problems. These issues started with the battery still in the factory location, factory cables and fuses, no wiring in the car touched in any way. It's completely stock with 110k miles. No CEL.

Since the battery change the car won't start without using starting fluid. Every once in a while it will start without fluid, but thats rare. Once the car fires off of the fluid it will stay running 99% of the time, no issues, runs strong and smooth. Every once in a while it will bog down and stall and it takes a few tries with starting fluid to fire and stay running. If you get the car running and shut it off then try to refire it, it will start without starting fluid 50% of the time.

With the key on and the engine not running you can hear the fuel pump and it sounds like there is a constant flow of gas going thru the rail. Fuel does pump out if a line is disconnected. There are no gas leaks. Key on and engine off there is approx 10v at the fuel pump. When cranking there is 0v at the pump. I wired the fuel pump directly to the battery to see if it's an electrical problem, but that made no difference, same symptoms. The car did sit for a while so I wasn't sure if the gas was stale, so I added some fresh gas, no change.

I have cleaned the plugs (fairly new platinum plugs), the pickups in the cap and the rotor had some rust on them, I cleaned them up. They are worn but not terribly, should be fine to get the car running as a test. There is spark at the plugs when the car won't start, but I'm not sure how strong it is.

I've heard the coil in these cars is a common problem. I haven't had a chance to test it yet, I'll do that this afternoon. Might that be my problem? Does anybody know how to test the igniter in this car? I doubt the fuel filter would be so clogged that it's causing this but who knows. Anyone have any advice? I'm supposed to run the car Saturday night and I'm not sure where to go from here.

Do you have a spark?

Your problem is you have 0v at the fuel pump while cranking. you're getting spark and air because you can spray starter fluid and it will start. Check the fuel pump wiring diagram and see what conditions have to be met for the fuel pump to turn on while cranking. I imagine it has something to do with the ignition switch or a relay. Something along those lines since the only time the fuel pump doesn't have source voltage is while its cranking. If you're able to get your hands on a wiring diagram post it and we'll try to figure it out.
