Other K series tuning options?
I was just wondering if there is anything out there to effectively tune K series builds sort of something exotic like Motec.
Any idea what Skunk2 is using on their Project Alpha/Beta cars?

Re: Other K series tuning options?
The M400 Motec units have the ability for continuously variable camshaft control.
If you're running VTEC killer cams I'd assume the Motec M4 would work fine.
If you're serious about doing it, I'd get in touch with one of Motec's dealers and talk to them about it.

Re: Other K series tuning options?
Even though Motec is the best tunning solution period, the cost and the fact that it will do more than what you will ever need is totally over kill. AEM or Kpro will do more than enough. Kpro will be the easiest to tune.

what are your plans for the car? kpro has pretty much every option you would ever need. i've also heard aem ems is kinda finicky with k motors as well.

DTA S-series ECU's have VTEC & VTC control, 4-wheelspeed Traction control, launch, anti-lag.... all that fun stuff.
It is what all the Norma M20 guys use to tune their K20A's

If there is any need to be obd2-legal, then hondata kpro is the way to go.

Re: Other K series tuning options?
There are at least a dozen ecu solutions. Motec is probably the best but there are some other solutions for about half the cost of motec that are very very close. There are used on racecars and most of them require a unique engine harness.
Kpro has around 8000 units out and has essentially created the kseries swap market because it is user friendly and gives you the idea that you have complete control of the motor.

Re: Other K series tuning options?
a lot of people run kpro because its the easiest and cheapest. obiviously motec would be the best but it can get costly. AEM is another option that gives you a bunch tuning abilities and it isnt too much money

Re: Other K series tuning options?
i thought motec was vastly superior to kpro, as in it had more functions.
and aem slightly better being a true standalone in the same price range as k-pro.
k-pro = just a daughter board, i don't think it would be obd-2b legal either, won't they figure out if the mainboard has been hard/soft modified since they are scanning it through the diagnostics port during a smog check or, referee station inspection?
i'd think the only ref station legal immobilizer solution would be the proper ECU for the bone stock engine( or CARB legal bolt-ons) with the hybrid racing "black box" they have listed on their site.

Re: Other K series tuning options?
if on a budget for a street car, you can always use the jdm prc ecu and a vafc-2...did that and made really good power for a simply build. otherwise aem and kpro ...

Re: Other K series tuning options?
Nothing against K-Pro, but K-Pro and a stand alone race management system (like Motec) really should not be compared. I'm not here to say one is better than the other, I'd just like to point out that they are two completely different worlds of engine management.
With a system like Motec (or EFI Technologies, or Pectel, etc...), not only is the system configurable to support any engine you want, but the options and features are "ala carte."
Example: You want to buy a Motec M400.
That's cool, they're $3,527.00
Do you want to hook it up to anything? If so, add another $420.00 for a universal un-terminated harness.
A custom pre-terminated harness will be an additional $1300. - $1800.
Would you like to have a wideband 02? If so, we need another $613.00 to turn the feature 'on' in the box.
Plus the NTK sensor itself is an additional $661.50.
Want dual widebands? Plan on doubling that.
Would you like to datalog anything? If so, that's an additional $336.00 (1meg)
And if you're a baller, Pro-Analysis logging is an additional $1089.00
Advanced function enable: $662.00
Telemetry Output: $1,041.00
Remote Logging: $1,041.00
Cam Control: $408.00
Drive By Wire (enable): $477.00
Traction Control Multiplexer: $457.00
I've sold several Motec systems (mostly M800s & M880s) that eclipse $20K when everything is said & done.

Re: Other K series tuning options?
Haltech now has the K-Series plug and play solutions as a true standalone unit as well, another option.
And I wouldnt say KPRO is the EASIEST to tune...26 total maps to tune compared to one fuel and one timing map with AEM but it certainly seems to make a car run well
