Is this S2000 worth purchasing?
Hello,
So I have a friend who has an 2000 s2000 with 173k miles on it. Its clean as hell with VIN matching OEM hartop. Everything else is basically stock besides cat back exhaust, and some 5zigen wheels. He's asking 9,000 but I'm sure I can get it for 8,000 off him.
My question is, how much is an s2k engine rebuild typically? or maybe even a full swap? I assume I could drive his car for another 30k because he has receipts from the dealer for work that has been done since day one.
I wanted to spend 13-14k on one with lower miles but this might be better bang for the buck if I swap out the motor in a bit? Its clean title as well. Just wanted to know the pro's thoughts on this idea.
Thanks in Advance,
Doug

ok first off you can go alot more then just 30k more, IF you are like your friend and do regular service on it...and why bother swapping it? if your going to build the motor, send it out get a rebuild kit ( oem or custom internals) and go from there, the 13-14 k could make that car a very nice turbo, super charged or all motor car. im sure a few guys on here will agree...get the car , figure out what you want out of it.....plan it out and go from there....this could turn into a very nice car gl

At 173k, keep in mind that it's going to need bushings and other stuff eventually. 8k seems high to me at that mileage, considering there are sub 100k mile cars for sale in my area for ~10k.

8k doesn't seem too bad...
with OEM hardtop and wheels as the previous guy said. The car is way clean. I've attached a pic. I do have to think about the bushings and such. I also know replacing bushings is a bitch to do. It also has a really nice stereo system, even though that doesn't really matter.

Car looks good. $8K seems high (just a little) but the paint looks nice, and if you know what kind of owner this guy was, and he took good care of the car, it could very well be worth the money.
I would take it somewhere that knows S2000's and knows what to look for, and see what they have to say about it after looking it over.
BUT, based on what you've said about it so far, I'd probably buy it.

I purchased the car this morning and have been driving it around all day... The car is really amazing. I've driven almost every honda, and nothing compares to this in my opinion. It feels like a true road car. Going to be hard to downgrade to anything else after this.

Re: Is this S2000 worth purchasing?
my personal opinion is that the price is a tad bit high for that year/mileage. I have seen some s2000s go for about 12k, silver, oem hardtop, and about 100k on the clock. I believe you should offer him less.
Also the black/black is pretty common, so it gets no extra points. It all has to do with color combos as well sometimes. For example, if it was a 2001 GPW with red interior, and given those miles (173k) even without an OEM hardtop, i would pay 8k.Thats the exceptions you have to make to have a rare color combo, but for a black/black, id offer him about 7k.
If you swap out the motor, just realize that there are other factors that you have take into account. Some being: the transmission, diff, suspension components etc. It can have a fresh motor, but there are other parts on it that will still have 173k miles of wear. Something to think about it...but it is clean, so all the best to you, and keep us updated.

I hear what you are saying about the color combos and that raising or lowering the price. I was actually looking for black on black, so as that might not be the ideal color for resale price, it was the ideal color choice for me. Good point though about swapping the engine and still have other parts with lots of miles on it. I'll keep a good eye on the suspension, bushings, tranny, etc... and hopefully can keep those repaired when needed. I already bought it, for 8,200 actually, and I haven't regretted it yet. Car feels great. idles perfectly at 800-1000 and pull solid through the power band. Thanks again for all the advice.
