Default looking to purchase s2k in near future

I discovered my credit union offers auto purchasing through Autonation, and they offer great apr. So I called them up today and requested listings of 2006+ s2k.

Is there anything in particular I should be on the lookout for? Any recommendations on where to go for PPI? They offer a 3 day 150 mile warranty on the car, at which any time before that I can return it for a complete refund.

Color preference was

GPW
Red
and silver
may consider yellow as well

If it drives well:
- strong through the powerband with obvious transition to VTEC (the whole, redline included, powerband)
- shifts without grinds
- no popping out of gear
- no clunks when turning
- no vibrations on accel
No sign of accident with matching VINs on all panels.
No sign of frame damage with good tracking and tire wear. Low tire pressure can easily cause the car to pull to one side, so check if tracking is a problem.

Then you are off to a pretty good start.

If the diff or trans had a problem it is usually obvious in this car, it does not hide it's faults well at all. As far as taking the car through the rev-range before purchase, have the owner do it with you as a passenger. They may not like you whipping the car and blowing a shift is not the way to get things started. Insist on it, you will see redline in this car a lot and need to know all is well. That leaves the engine internals as far as big $$ are concerned. Obviously, no knocking on startup is good. A card-in-the-spokes type sound is the timing chain tensioner and I would not consider it a deal-breaker on an otherwise good specimen. During that 3-day/150 mile period a leakdown and compression test is an absolute must to check valves for a missed shift, which is sadly common in this car. A retainer inspection would be great if you know someone who knows what they are looking for, this applies mostly to AP1 or pre-04 years. The AP2 retainers are pretty tough and opinion is a valve will get smacked and bent before they fail. Blackstone oil analysis if they can do it that fast.

Second to last suggestion, buy from a private party if you can. It will tell you the most about the history of the car. The S2000 is a great car but high strung and benefits from service spec. If it has been well cared for by the previous owner it should give you years of fun. Most who got one, did it to drive them hard. If service was neglected it could bite you later. Just meet the person and get an impression.

Best of luck.

Since you have 3 days for the full refund you should have a trusted mechanic look at it and give him a heads up on comon problems that s2's have.

If you are going to go with a PPI, have someone who knows S2k's extensively check it out. Shops will only check the basic things, and wont know the quirks of the S. Search around on forums to find people in your area and see if anyone is willing to help.
