Default Why does my Prelude feel like it wants to fishtail?

Heres my problem, let me explain it to you as best as I can. When im going straight either on the highway or streets going 50 MPH+ and I turn the steering wheel about 4 inchs left and 4 inchs right it feels like my car wants to fish tail. I still can corner hard as normal and the front wheels feel stable its just the rear wheels feel lose. I just notice this because I just bought new tires and a 3 year aliment plan

I bought a 3 year aliment plan and 4 new tires, 205-50-16-R Cooper zeon 2XS and they are W rated. After the aliment It turn more to the right than it did before so the next day I take it back and they fix it. and about 2 weeks later I notice it was doing this. what could be the problem? Im sure the cooper tires are better than stock and before this I had 205-50-16-ZR bridgestone Pontezas RE730s.

Is this normal or what?

What are your suspension mods?

I remember my 00 SH doing that because I had the rear higher than the front. And without strut bars.

Seems normal to me.

I felt the same problem on my 97' SH after a new set of Z rated Pirelli P-Zero Nero's.. Basically, it felt really wishy-washy and unstable on sudden steering changes while still cornering really well (as long as the direction didn't change too much in the corner).

Fast forward 5-6 months later, my tires are about half worn down and the feeling is much much better. In my case, the tread was a little too deep which was causing the tread to flex (but not the sidewalls). So if I were you, I'd wait it out and maybe do some good burnouts until the feeling starts to improve.

My Preludes suspension is competely stock.

I guess I have to wait it out cuz I don't think I can get a refund on the tires.

Thanks guys.

you might of gotten one of those RWD hondas. i dunno

Might want to check tire pressure in the rear, they might of over inflated them or something. sounds kinda weird to me.

Prelude's on stock height feels like a boat on the ocean at high speeds. It's perfectly normal. Drop that bitch and get some strut bars.

disable the atts, problem solved. haha. Mine felt the same way till i gutted the trunk, now it feels better. Even with azenis on it felt like it wanted to come around. Maybe it was designed that way to take corners faster without sliding.

it could also be a crappy alignment, a place that just does it "within specs" can still ahve a shitty alignment....

I had the same thing happen a while ago and it turned outone of the bolts that hold the lower rear control arm to the frame had come out like 1/4"... I took a simple turn and almost spun out.

Strut bars don't actually do much, if anything at all with respect to increasing roll resistance.

Are you reducing throttle input during your "manuvers"? Or are you staying in the gas?
I bet your lifting , which, = a loose rear.

PS : If you're toe is out of whack (front to back, back to front whatever) that'll compromise your high speed stability; usually too much toe out up front, or some accidental toe out in the rear as you never, intentionally, want to run any rear toe out.

I said on stock suspension. Is your suspension stock? If so, and you think it's steady. You haven't rode on a tein SS equiped 5th gen. The difference is night and day. I was talking about taking S curves and corners...etc

I think something is loose in the back. When you corner, it gets pushed one way and stays there, thus you don't notice the looseness. Check out everything back there.

I like my ATTS, What do you mean gut the trunk? just remove carpet, spare, jack?

I can let go of the gas and it will still have the same results.

Here are the specs of my aliment right now. can you guys read this? does it sound right?

heres a for all my fellow prelude owners for the input and the help.

So you're saying you don't feel any body roll while switching lanes, going through curves?

Maybe there was something wrong w/ my car, maybe it's just me, or maybe it's just you. *shrug*

I should of been more specific. I had the rear higher than the front on cheap coilovers before I went with Tein SS.

And I still say 5th gens on stock suspensions feels like a god damn boat.

It feels like a god damn 4x4.

I"m saying letting go of the gas, makes the rear light and if you're turning while lifting off the gas, that's going to really make your rear very light.

I 'd say have your rear toe reset to ZERO.

And, make sure you have very little toe out dialed in up front.

HAve you checked your tire pressures?

UM 4 inches to the left and right on the wheel over 50 mph is kinda asking for it!

Think about it thats alot to just move the wheel suddenly back and forth you gonna swing ig around eventually.

I almost lost it ounce doing that avoiding something in the middle of the road at 60 and If I wasnt paying attention I would have swungf the car around right into the curb.

My conclusion...Its normal, and be careful driving man that is just asking for it.

Yea if you are not the first and only owner of that car I would try and find out if the car was even in an accident because that seems skittish. If the car was never in an accident then you should look at the suspension, tire pressure, alignment, and/or axles. I have found that adding bigger tires with lower series tires to my car made it feel a little unstable and when my car was in need for an alignment, but not to the extent of fishtailing.
