VSS dies briefly in cold weather. Bad VSS? Bad connection?
Does this sound like a bad VSS? I've read when they start going bad they work intermittently, but I'm not sure if you'd call this "intermittent"... Every cold morning and evening (in San Diego, so "cold" as in 50 degrees) the speedo will die for 1 to 5 minutes when I start the car, then come back on perfectly.
Sometimes it even works initially for a moment, then drops to 0, then comes back online. Seems to stay off longer when the weather is colder, and never has a problem on nice afternoons. USUALLY the check engine light comes on (checked the code and of course it's VSS), but sometimes the speedo will be at zero for several minutes and no light.
Anyone had this experience and diagnosed it? I'd love to wiggle and probe for loose connections, but other than the 3 inches of wire I can barely see right at the VSS connector, I have no idea where it routes to. (Kinda disappears into the black abyss of the engine...)
It's a '92 Prelude SI (non-VTEC), manual trans. Thanks.
