Default Valve Adjustment ?'s

well i just adjusted my valves today and everything went as expected. Until i started the car, my exhaust has a rattle now? its in between 2000-3500 rpms, Its happening if i rev the car or while driving (accelaration and decelaration).

My question is basically how is this related to the valve adjustment and what could possibly be wrong? I already rechecked the clearances and they are all within specs.

well i just drove the car again to get some dinner. some more details, the rattle is most prevalent between 2200 and 2700 and is very loud on zero throttle deceleration. The only thing i can think of is the lash was set on .008 and i tightened them down to .007, but i don't understand why that would produce a rattling sound

Does it sound like small pebbles rolling around in the bottom of a tin can?

This is off the wall, but what you're describing does sound like tip in detonation.

It may be a mere coincidence that it showed up when you did your valve adjustment. Run octane booster and see if it goes away. Just a thought outside of chasing valve lash around.

Just sounds like a loose bolt somewhere. Double check everything.

it sounds exactly like a loose heat shield would and i just ran some octane booster last week. I'm about to go recheck the clearances and possibly set the lash at the loosest tolerances. I didn't have any tapping last night but i now do at idle so i'm guessing that could be it.

This is a shot in the dark, but after you've tightened down the screw, you're double checking your clearance right? It's very easy to turn the nut as you're tightening down the screw. I always double and sometimes triple check all clearances after everything is down tight.

If you were complaining about the rattling and did not mention the valve adjustment, I would have thought it was an auto-tensioner problem.

yes clearances were triple checked. I checked the lash again and fixed the tap (no.4 intake valves loose, i hate doing that cylinder). Anyway i had a friend rev the engine while i listened for the rattle. Guess what that heat shield sound is a...

................. heat shield .

well i at least think its a heat sheild, my flex joint before the cat is at a weird angle and it sounds as though its coming from there. I'm going to put it on a lift tomorrow and check if its touching a heat shield. I'm guessing that lifting the front drivers side to remove the wheel (which i now know is unneccesary to turn the crank) Caused the flex joint to move.

Get rid of that flex joint! install the header!

Though if you're hearing the noises outside the engine it's either a heat sheild or a exhaust leak. Though if your valve clearances were way off you may need to allow some time for the ECU to relearn the effects of the tighter valves. A friend's engine actually died a few times because his valves were pretty far out of spec.
