I never use a torque wrench on the drain plug b/c the friction is never enough to make the wrench kick back...so you end up destroying the threads and the pan. Just do it 1/4 after it doesn't turn easily with the wrench.

Thats wierd; I've used a torque wrench every time and never had a problem. Have you always replaced the copper crush washer?

Re: Torque Specs on Oil Drain Plug on 5th gen (tec-9-7)
Not always, but the previous one never looked any different from a new one...so I just reused it. Even then, I replace the washer every third oil change.
It's probably because I coat the drain plug threads with oil to keep it from sticking to the oil pan threads. When i coat the threads, some of it probably carries over onto the washer/bolt head mating surface.

*Always* replace the crush washer. They cost like $0.25/ea. It prevents leaks and keep you from buying a new oil pan.
