Default Timing belt? Fuel? Motor gone?

I have a 95 accord with a h22a in it. I was just driving normally and when I was trying to accelerate a little, the car didn't want to give any power.. it started to slowly sputter and then die out on me. At first I thought it was my fuel.. since it was pretty low, but the gas light never turned on. So I walked over to the gas station to get some gas. I put 2 gallons in and tried to start her. Instead of starting, I got this nasty grinding/clanking noise as I'm trying to start it. It never started. Every attempt, you'll hear the nasty grinding or some random backfires. I was clueless.. and kept trying to start it. Eventually it turned on and I held the rpms at around 2k, if I let off, the car would just die. While the car is running, I still hear the nasty grinding/crunching. I drove it around for about a mile to further see what was wrong. Every time I tried to accelerate a little, there was barely any power. I just pulled over and it died on me. Whenever I try to start it up now, it's doing the same grinding/crunching sound and doesn't want to start. Problem? Thanks.

Grinding and Crunching do not go hand in hand with "The Sounds an Engine Ever Should Make"

Where does the sound come from in the engine bay? You need to isolate the sound by either using a mechanic's or similar.

Or post a sound clip on here if you can figure out how to do it (I have yet to do this myself so don't know how)

Could it be considered a knocking sound that varies in speed along with rpm?

It could be about a million things so you need to find the aproximate area of where its comming from or get it towed and have a diagnostics done on it.

normally i would say it could be starter related but since you did get it to start that seems unlikely. Need more info in order to make a good enough guess as to what it might be.

Why would you drive a car that was making those sounds? It could be the belt slipping on your timing and you just tore up some valves. I'm guessing you went from a small issue to a big dollar one. However, if it was me, I'd look and see if you notice anything. Any oil leaks? If not, I'd take the valve cover off and take a peak inside and take a look at the timing belt and see if you see anything there. Once the belt is removed you can try to manually turn the cams and see if you hear anything.
