Default Prelude 99 Sh issues

Hi everyone,

I just bought a black 99 SH prelude 2 weeks ago with 120,000 miles on it. The car is in a great shape. I looked at many preludes in my area that were for sale, but all of them were rusty and had very high mileage, so when I went to look at the one I bought I was so amazed how nice it was and due to my excitement I forgot to look at some little details. I got the car for 1500 under bluebook value and thought to myself that I got me a great deal, until I drove the car for a week and started to realize that I might have done a bad deal. Its probably worth mentioning that the engine-bay is sparkling clean, the car is lowered on Tien springs, AEM cold air intake, DC exhaust system, and front and rear aftermarket sway bars.

1) The previous owner claims that the timing belt on the car has been changed but no records, so I will be changing it here in couple of days just to be on the safe side.
2) When it’s cold outside, the car idles so rough to a point where I feel that its going shut off, so the mechanic will look at that for me when he does the timing belt.
3) Check engine light is on and throwing an EGR error

My quote from my mechanic is around $1,100 for a regular tune up, spark plug, oil and filter, EGR, and the mentioned above.

This is very stupid on my part buying the car with these issues but oh well; It’s too late to regret it now. All the mechanical problems will be fixed by my mechanic but there are two more problems that are not so mechanical and I was hopping to fix them myself with some help from you guys.

1) Both driver and passenger windows are sort of jumpy while they are going down and they kind of chock when they are going up. I greased the tracks and it seemed to fix the problem for a week and then the problem came back. Also, the driver window, when I put it up it goes over the rubber track and leave a gap, so It is sort of an alignment issue but I cannot figure it out.
2) The power door lock is not working properly. When I bought the car I was given two sets a of keys with two transmitters. If I hit the unlock or the lock button on the transmitter all I can here is a click ( I’m assuming it’s the relay) but nothing happens; it doesn’t lock or unlock. So for me to lock or unlock the car I have to use the key. Now, lets say I unlock the driver’s side with the key and I want to unlock the passenger side so I hit the lock/unlock switch on the driver’s door and what happens is that it sometimes unlocks it and sometimes it doesn’t. so even the switches are not working right, but I still can hear the relay clicking. It just feels that the actuators are not getting enough power or probably not even getting power. I don’t know where to start with this, but I know though that the signal transmitter located by the back seat works fine because I can hear the relay click when I hit the buttons. As far as the actuators, I’m not so sure, but I kind of doubt that both of them are bad. Now, the service manual refers to something called control unit input in the trouble shoot, but I’m not sure what that is.
I would really appreciate and help or suggestion on the window and power lock issues.

$1100 to do a tune up, look at the rough idle situation and change the TB is too much.

You can change the spark plugs, wires and oil change with very little effort yourself. The TB change should be around $500-600 with OEM parts. Unless you have a hookup in which it should be less.

120,000miles for the code 80 PO401 EGR flow insufficient sounds about right. You will need to clean the EGR valve and the EGR ports in the intake manifold. There are DIYs for this job here and on other Honda, Accord, & Prelude sites if you search for them.

The egr valve is most likely fine. Remove it and clean it, but more importantly follow this. You need to clean the metering ports in the intake manifold:

It does sound like your door lock actuators need to be changed.
