Default No hydrolocking for me

After driving around in the rain today and through big puddles I decided to modify my AEM.

All done:

you would literally have to go under water to go into hydrolock...

My filter was just above my spash guard in front of my wheel. It wouldn't take that deep of a puddle to submerge it. My lowered car + a parking lot exit that dips down + large puddle could = hydrolocking. And since I'm going forced induction in about a month I had no problem cutting my AEM in half. Better safe than sorry.

yeah thats true....better safe then sorry...but that would take a hell of a big puddle for that to happen...and you would have to hit that puddle pretty damn hard. What FI set up are you doing?

Actually you guys are all wrong on going through a big puddle. I know this cause it happened to me. Yeah I went through a puddle, but my filter was not submerged deep into it. I didn't see the puddle unitl it was too late and all of a sudden, my motor just shut off. Hydrolocking will happen if you are driving through heavy rain. If you go through a puddle of water, it doesnt even have to be deep just don't gas it when you do go through it or you end up sucking in water. Air only sucks in real hard if you press on the gas.

Why didn't you use an AEM bypass valve?

I bought my AEM before they made that thing. Also, that thing doesn't work.

Wow, you can do all that with a gun, pencil, paper towel roll, and some saw blades.

Why is there a gun in the picture, haha!

A magazine has done a test with an NSX equipped with an AEM cai and air by pass valve on a dyno. The NSX did a full 3rd gear dyno run with the filter submerged in water. I know that they had a recall on some of the earlier ones but that problem was fixed over 6 months ago. So how don't they work?

Nothing. I was curious as to why you said the AEM bypass valve didn't work.

I don't know where you got that idea, I wasn't submerged when I hydrolocked my motor.

The bypass valve is only going to work if the filter is completely submerged. You could easily suck both air and water up your intake.

I have sucked in water through my old CAI (has not happend with the AEM yet) a couple of times without submerging it. I have had to pull over on the side of the freeway and remove the filter and lower part of the pipe so I could drive. Luckily each time the amount of water was minute enough where it did not kill the motor, just made it run like ****!

I have no doubt that a cai can suck up water and cause a motor to hydrolock. I'm just saying that the air bypass valve should be able to prevent this.

Actually, the air by pass valve works on pressure it opens when too much vacuum pressure is used to pull in air. If your filter is simply wet, the pressure is not high enough. if water gets through your wet filter, it will still not be high enough for the valve to open. You have to submerge your filter for the valve to open.

I said I'd test it on my car if someone wants to buy me a nitrous kit if I'm right.
