Ok so I was on break at work and decided to pop the hood and check my air filter. It was close to needing to be replaced last time I changed my oil so I figured id check it out. I pop the cover off and here the large black plastic hose attached to the cover has a 3/4 around slice or crack in it !!! Now when I put the air filter cover back on the slice is very clean so it butted up against itself just fine but no doubt must be replaced. My question is should I not drive the vehicle until I get if fixed ? Secondly could this reasonably explain my crappy gas mileage lately ? What other noticeable things could result from this ? Where would you guys suggest starting to look for a replacement ?

I have not posted much since I have joined but when I did everyone was very helpful. I must say I have learned quite a bit about our wonderful Preludes reading all the posts and FAQ's. I am thankful for a community like this and hope to gain enough knowledge of Preludes and cars in general to someday be a contributor as well as a beneficiary.

not quite sure what hose your talking about...maybe a picture?...or take another picture of the net of an engine bay and point out what hose your talking about?

It is cracked at the first bend after the intake cover , about 3/4 of the way around. The intake cover is wedged in there pretty good and I had more difficulty than I thought I would taking it off to check the filter. Im afraid to replace the filter now because I dont want to crack the intake tube all the way now.

For a temporary fix, i would super glue both sides of the crack, then apply pressure for a good minute or so. Then use some wide electrical tape to wrap around the cracked section a few times for added strength, then put in the new filter and forget about it. Secondly you could get a quote for just that part from your local wrecker and if you can afford it buy it and fit that. Thirdly if you have some money you could consider this a good time to get rid of the whole intake system and buy an AEM cold air intake or another similar product, or a short air ram with a K&N Filter. Thats all the options you have that i can think of, hope this helps, goodluck with it

Thanks for the input. I will do my best to patch it up temporarily. I am actually saving now for timing belt - water pump - tune up and fluids etc , so I will wait until thats done before considering any aftermarket upgrades like intake-header-exhaust.

If I dont have luck finding a used one at the scrapyard where do you guys suggest looking. Im guessing my local Honda dealership ? I will try doing a search online now as well.

Also , what type of problems do you think this has been or could be causing me. Like I said in my first post I am starting to think this had something to do with my crappy gas mileage lately. Just as a guess for now , I will really check next fill up but Id say I have been getting about 16 mpg , 75% city driving.

I drove with mine sliced open for about 2 months. I didn't know it was like that, but it didn't cause any noticeable problems at all.

It was an AEM CAI though it was cut right where it rubs on the hole by the fender:

some superglue or tape although may sound like a temp. solution to the crack in the plastic it will really do the same as a newer un-cracked intake tube....although it may look a bit ghetto
I highly doubt thats the reason for your gas milage....maybe it is time to change that air filter tho, that could help, get a K&N with a oiling/cleaning kit and you will never have to buy another filter.

To conquer you gas milage problem start replacing things like the dizzy cap and rotor, plugs and wires, fuel filter......oh and start shifting 500rpm lower everytime that should get you over the 20 mpg mark

I fully plan on changing the air filter this weekend. Thanks for the brand/type recommendation. After that I will glue and tape the tube as I dont want to have to remove the air filter cover again until its fixed.

Like I was saying Im not to far away from being able to afford to do some work on the car. Timing Belt & Tensioner , Water Pump , Dizzy-cap-rotor-plugs-wires, all fluids and filters , 4 rotors (already have all the brake pads) and whatever else is involved with a thorough tune-up. Suggestions welcome here.....

Anybody wanna take a shot at what all that will run me ???

I will probably end up having 1,500 max to invest.
