New tranny or old? Need your opinion
My 2001 prelude has about 81k and a couple of weeks ago my auto tranny started slipping and jerking. So I went to a Honda dealership left the car overnight and the following morning they said I needed a new transmission. The cost for them to replace it is $4,200 with 3 year warranty. I went home and did some research on the Internet and found out that Honda Preludes 1999-2001 with auto transmission have extended warranty to cover faulty transmission. The extended warranty was for 93 months or 109k miles which ever comes first. Currently, the car has 101 months and 81k miles, so the car missed the warranty by 8 months.
The following day I called Honda's corporate office to see if they can help me out with the transmission eventhough I knew my warranty is expired. They gave a case number and was told that I will get a call from a case manager within a couple of days. And I did!!! The service manager from the dealership where I always go told me that she was given by Honda the authorization to issue a 50% discount to replace my auto tranny. So now all I have to pay is $2300/including taxes with 3 year warranty.
Now here is my dilemma. I went to AAMCO today to see if they can fix my transmission and they said they can but it will cost me $1000 with 6 months warranty from AAMCO.
Shoul I take the deal from AAMCO ($1000 with 6 months warraty) or Honda ($2300 with 3 years warranty)??? Please help me decide on this one.
Thanks in advance. Sorry it 's quite a novel

NirVTEC: Thanks for your help. I think you are right about the trannny going out again. I will take the car to Honda first thing on Monday. Hope the new tranny will be ok. thanks again.
Also, kudos to Honda for splitting the cost to replace my tranny.

The difference between Honda and others....Honda knows they screwed up, and they were strong enough to help people out.
Chrylser wouldn have screwed you.

Not surprised Honda is helping out. They should, and they usually do.
Since your car still is low mileage, I would have Honda change it for you. It's nice to have the extended warranty, too, because it will be a selling-point just in case you need to sell your car before then.

Have Honda replace it. I had my 01 transmisison replaced as well. Honda will replace the torque converter with the new trans (this is a must when rebuilding/replacing a new transmission). They will also install a filter on the the transmission cooling lines so if any particles are left in oil cooler, it will be trapped there. This also will help your new transmission stay clean.
While they are replacing the transmission, I had them replace my rear main oil seal as a preventative measure, so I suggest you do the same. Should cost you less than $50.

Re: New tranny or old? Need your opinion
Hey thank you all for helping out. I will definitely have my transmission replaced by Honda as soon as next week.
VPUPPY: Do I have to ask them to replace the torque conventer and install filter as well? Or is it standard for them to do all that along putting a new transmission?
Thanks in advance.
