Just bought myself a nice 5th gen, and I am in love with this car. I am looking at replacing the stock exhaust and can't decide what to get, I have it narrowed down to three options:

1) Greddy Evo II
2) Mugen Twin Loop
3) Tanabe Ultra Medallion

I'm looking for a deep sounding exhaust that doesn't get too high-pitched. Anyone have experience with any of these?

Edit: Is the Mugen and Tanabe exhausts worth the extra money?

I suggest going custom.

I don't have personal experience with the Mugen, but I've heard at WOT it is actually fairly loud. The Evo is baffled, iirc, and is therefore fairly restrictive. Haven't heard much on the Tanabe.

One of my prelude "buddies" from around my way has a Mugen twin loop on his 5th gen, and while at WOT it is a little on the loud side, its not an obnoxious loud like the civic hatches with Buddy Club SpecIIs that seem to be a dime a dozen around here. It actuall sounds quite good IMO for being kind of loud

i had a greddy evo and just traded it for a tanabe super hyper medallion, just for the looks of the canister. I personally dont like the looks of the ultra medallion but the evo sounds beautiful. and you can never go wrong with a mugen twin loop.

First, are you replacing the entire exhaust or just the muffler?

I would say mugen twin loop just b/c. But it restricts air flow so no power to really be made. Im running hytech replica header, test pipe, no resonator apexi ws2. not loud at all at WOT. Just a nice deeper tone

Bullshit......thats why its a twin loop. I suppose the $400 HyTech twin loop restricts as well.
A Twip Loop is the best sounding exhaust ever MFR'd for a Prelude.......

Personally, I'd still love to play around with a Mustang Muffler on a Prelude.......although I don't think I'd get that same awesome sound that has made me smile for 20yrs. 1/2 engine FTL!

All mufflers restrict air flow. That's their purpose. To slow it down, making the exhaust tone quieter. The question is how much does it restrict. Baffled/chambered canisters restrict more than straight-through canisters, but are also quieter.

28" extra piping and 2 passes through the muffler.....Quiet with top notch performance.
The Mugen is a 2.36" so I'd pass on that......
GL finding them, they were $1k when new and will last all of 10yrs+ as do their headers. My friend is past the 10yr/100k mark with his header/exhaust combo.

So the twin loop design doesn't restrict the air flow more so than say a standard designed exhaust?

No, they are designed to flow with the best of them, but NOT be loud as hell[like the rest of them]

My 2.5" piping with test pipe, no res, 2.5" muffler performs as good as an open header and its noisy as hell[still quieter than the open header, but not much].........A sacrifice I was willing to make for a Racecar that doesn't see much street duty.......

If money was no object, I would be running a 3", test pipe, resonator, HyTech twin loop muffler. In theory, quiet with no loss in performance.....

Look into the RSR. Pretty stealthy aftermarket exhaust. There are all kinds of sounds clips on the net. Just sounds like something you might like w your criteria. Also, its about 1/2 the price of the Mugen.

If you really want an exhaust, get an Greddy SP2 instead of the greddy evo.
The performance is better because I tried and compare them.

don't even waste your time/money. custom 3" header back is the only way to go.

I have always been under the impression that 2.5in and 2.25in is the best diameter for NA motors.... and 3in for FI cars. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

For a boosted engine, the bigger the exhaust, the better. A turbo itself will be happiest with no exhaust at all, but of course you have to have something on there so the biggest thing you can fit is the best choice for power.

the Greddy SP2 is a very nice unit. 5yrs of Chicago winters and its still perfect. Nice and quiet until you really step on it. I don't run a cat, but with a cat on there, it would sound even nicer.

twin loop minimizes the sound. Mugens exhaust is one of the best sounding for our cars and does its job better than most.

the main reason most exhausts are loud or not is because of the resonators and mufflers as well as the cats etc....
its really going to depend on WHY you want the exhaust... looks? power? sound? are you trying to get an exhaust to compliment your set up or just to be cool?
do like deep and raspy? loud and noisy?

personally i like the Tanabe Touring Medallion and would opt out of any round muffler aside from the Mugen.... i prefer oval mufflers for because they dont sit as low from the under-carriage so theres less damage if your car is dumped.

PA. went to school in Johnstown. They got snow my cars got more rust then the exhaust.

Dunno its huge. ITs like offset and the canister is hidden more under car.
