I think I blew it up.....
Well... just as soon as I got the damn thing working really nice... I think I blew it up...
I was getting on the highway behind some douche in a V6 Mustang and I was in second... I hit 7800rpm then go to third.... Go up to 7800 and then hit fourth... But when I hit fourth, I felt the damn thing go into gear and I let off the clutch and put my foot on the floor and BAM..... The engine revs off the damn tach! (I'm estimating around 8,900rpm)....
So I immediately swerve off the highway onto the nearest on ramp and I bring to it a stop light and it dies.... I'm like oh my god, I did NOT just blow this thing up.... I restart it and it barely runs until I gave it some gas then it went. I turn right and accelerate and its just fine! Hits VTEC, still pulls hard and all!! But I get to the next line and bam it dies again.... It did it all the way home until I pulled into my garage where I finally got it to idle....
It still runs and it still has power or what not, but now the idle is really choppy.... It runs really rough at low RPM and with the exhaust that's on it, it almost sounds like a boxer four Subaru...... Also when I crank the starter it turns VERY slowly and the engine barely fires..... It'll stumble for a few seconds until you give it gas then it'll idle like I said before, very very roughly...
Dude wtf did I do to it. Its the second time it happened (first time was at a drag strip when my friend threw it second instead of fourth. It revved to around the same, but was perfectly fine!!!!)..... I hope there's not a spun rod bearing or something..... Perhaps I threw the timing off???
Help me please.... I don't have the cash to do another H22 swap...

Fuel cut offs are actually really sweet things to have.
If it didn't catastrophically blow up bent valves probably. But who knows what happened to the rest of the engine.

******' cheap *** ebay chipped P13 doesn't have a rev limiter until like 9000rpm I think...

Woops.
It's not so cheap once you factor in the cost of a new (used) or rebuilt engine.

A rev limiter wouldn't have done anything for you in this case. You mechanically over-reved the engine by shifting into 2nd instead of 4th.
You mostly likely bent some/all exhaust valves, and that's why idle quality is not very good, but the engine still runs.
You need to do a leak down test to see which valves are bent. Checking the cam timing probably be a good idea too.

Yea, there's your problem right there.

Sounds like it went into gear, but probably not fourth!

...why would you get a chipped P13 with no supporting mods to account for higher rev limit? did you have future plans?
do what everyone else said. check timing first and do a leakdown test for sure. can you hear anything funny now as well? ticking?

i dont know guys, if he was aiming for 4th.. a monkey could do updown shift. sounds like neutral imo. or a popout that popped him out of 4th into 3rd somehow

idk. He could have one of these dangerous JDM shiftknobs.

Re: (ex95cord)
Yeah I had some plans for extensive head work later..... I took it over to my friend's house and took the dizzy apart...I think its an ignition problem.
The dizzy's internals were torn to hell. The little screw that holds the rotor button on had come off and chewed up some of the contacts in the cap along with some of the rotor button housing.... So we went to autozone, bought a new dizzy cap and took a rotor button off the JDM internal coil..... It ran BETTER (when you go to start it, you can tell it doesn't get a good spark at all)... still with a choppy idle but there's more power than there was before.... Now it seems to have full power, just a shitty *** idle and it sounds like a Subaru flat four at light throttle during low RPMs.
We also discovered that the contact on the H23 dizzy's coil is fucked up.... Doesn't seem to be alot of spark going to the plugs until high RPM where it runs strong and fine..... I recall back when we first got the motor working at the coil was initially sitting atop the thermostat housing cause it the bracket broke... When the coil overheated and started running low current, the Honda ran just like it did right now.....
So I hope its not a bent valve, because it runs strong as hell about 40% throttle... Full throttle is back to where it was before..... Either way, I'd be relieved to know that it was just valves and not something in the crank because I planned on building a head with valve work anyways.

Nah, he said was in 3rd, then tried to go to 4th, but probably pulled it a little too hard to the left due to the adrenaline rush and put it in 2nd without realizing it.
I'd still do a leakdown test just for peace of mind.

"VTEC kicked in yo" - yeah thats what happened I guess
I'll do a leakdown test on it. But hopefully its just an ignition problem lol.

Re: (117)
Hey just for an FYI... what would the car run like with bent valves...
Would it still make full power and pull really really good like it always has?

Yes. We've taken apart an engine with 170k miles on it that had bent valves for the last 40k miles of its life. It ran strong, but didn't idle worth a crap. The owner usually had to rev the engine to keep it running at stop lights.

Dude no offense and although this is going to sound harsh, but your a moron for using a ebay to begin with. It's absolutely wreckless. Change your sig to "wanna be ebay spoon sports cheapo ecu y0." Even if you did have future plans anyone with half a brain would get it properly tuned instead of buy a rip off chip. Good luck.

Re: (mgags7)
if you shift swiftly instead of forcibly, this is less likely to happen because the clutch basically locks you out and makes a terrible grind right? (watched my friend do it in his SH) lately i've been getting more used to the cross between 2/3 (i live in city and drive around here so im almost never out of 2nd gear) and i found that instead of using my palm to jam it into third, that just using basically my fingertips and moving in a up-right-up motion that im only a tiny bit slower than if i were to jam it in.
its hard to explain but its like im pulling the **** away from the boot instead of pushing down on it to move it. i havent mis-shifted yet, but god forbid when i do that it wont engage into gear fully.
