How to increase horsepower in a 1988 honda prelude?
hey im interested in a 1988 honda prelude, im just worried about the power! these come stock with only 135 horse and that seems pretty low! what can i do to boost the hp? is there anyway i can get like 160 hp without going turbo? just because a turbo is gonna cost me a couple grand im sure.

You can only go boost or swap to the H22/23 motor.
NA wise, its going to cost you about the same to build a B20a5 to run 160hp over boosting or swapping.
Trust me I now.
And if you want to see what others have done to make more hp on these motors, come over to www.p r e l u d e p o w e r.com(no spaces) because that is where this chassis is supported completely.

If you do not want to spend a few grand for a good turbo kit and a build or swap, try opening up the cars breathing. Get a good intake, header, and exhaust is always a good way to start.

Why don't you look into some other car in your price range that better suits what you really want? Why not look at a V8 Mustang, V8 Camaro, factory Turbo RX7, turbo Supra, etc? All of those will be making over 200HP and can be found cheaper than ever now that they're all 20+ year old cars. Of course there could be problems but that's no different for a 23 year old Honda either. There'll be tools on this message board that will naysay some of those cars but if you hop on a message board dedicated to one of the other cars I don't doubt you'll find people that say the Honda choice is crap too.
That'll get you maybe 5 more horses?

He will spend about:
$150 - For a premade intake(can be cheaper if he makes it himself with the writeups on prelude power.com(no space)
$200+ for a header
$600 for a good stainless steel mandrel bent exhaust (which I happen to be selling as a group buy at the moment)
For the exhaust email asap at: onefunrydperformance@q.com
For more details.
So all in all he is looking at close to a $1000 just for the basics, which will still not get you much power.
