Holy moly..no boot on axle
93lude vtec; this morning i jacked up my car and went under to check if any of the tranny bolts is loose since i felt the clutch is getting rough, but all the bolts are fine and tight until i look over to the driver's side axle..damn all i see is the metal clip that holds the boot hanging on the axle stick. Massive of grease got over everywhere..but the rubber boot was nowhere to be seen. How long would it last if i drive it..?

I would get the axle replaced ASAP. It's very hard to say how long it will last, but the axle could pop out and you could lose control.

Re: Holy moly..no boot on axle (Prelude951)
if its ur CV boot just get it repacked asap and u might save the axle. pretty cheap to get em repacked.. i rolled on my integra almost 5 months without a cv boot. so it could last u, but i would strongly reccomend against driving it till u get it fixed.

Okay.... There is no way it can "pop out" as you guys are saying... If you feel that the rubber boot is all that keeps the axle together.... I'll stop there..
I would replace it soon... Without rain it might last a couple of weeks... Maybe more... It's a very simple job to replace it (easier if it's the left cause you don't need to drain the tranny fluid) but either way it will only take like 30-60 mins... max..

It's not that the rubber boot is keeping the axle together. It's that the boot keeps the joint greased and away from the elements. Once the boot is gone, you have two peices of metal grinding against each other without any lubrication and also sand/dirt/etc can get in between the joint and wear it down even faster.
A remanufactured axle is no more than $100 and to me it is worth the added security.

Re: Holy moly..no boot on axle (Cashis Lee)
thanks guys..for the feedback. I guess i'll have to leave it parked until i get it fix then.
Did i need to get the rubber cv boot piece only or the whole axle. U guy think it's better to buy the complete axle instead of getting the boot and be a hassle to fill gease and clamp it down with special tools? thanks

Re: Holy moly..no boot on axle (Prelude951)
I had this happen on an old accord, however, I caught it before it started to "click". If it's not clicking when making a tight turn under power, you can probably save it by washing it out, in case any dirt got in there, repacking it with grease, and putting on one of those split boots.
If its making a clicking sound, and your worried about it failing because you don't know how long its been like that, take the time to replace the axle as mentioned.

yeah think that was it, made the clutch feels weird. Hey guys i just called this auto store from Auto Worldwide Parts, they want $44 for an remanufactured axle with my old axle exchange. Is that a good deal or should i not trust a remanufactured axle?

if a boot was the key item that kept the axle from falling apart into pieces I think we'd all be in trouble,
and regardless even say if ur axle fell off while ur driving, u in no way loose control. all u lose is power

$44 is a GREAT deal; mine was over $70 w/ core, IIRC.

If it fell off, yes you'd lose power. If it bound up or siezed from running dry for a while, especially on the interstate, it could cause you to lose control of your car.
I drove mine w/ no boot for about 2 months, and it started clicking right around then, when I replaced it. I went through dust and plenty of rain, but i would never do it again.

if it ran that dry and seized up it would just snap, and you will loose power

Just replace the boot. You can do it yourself. I replaced mine myself, and it only cost about $20 for 2 CV boots and grease

Re: Holy moly..no boot on axle (prelude1897)
if its not clickin just buy the boot, take the axle out, clean it with gas really well, pack that bitch with some marine grade grease and you should be fine...as long as its not clicking yet. also when its out you can usually inspect the bearings and thier races. if they look scared at all i would just get a new axle.

If the reman axle is only 44 dollars I say just replace the whole axle. Whats the warranty b/c around here you can get remans w/ a liftime warranty for around 50 bucks each ( no joke ARI reman).
